START BY:
a. remove camshaft
b. remove automatic timing advance (953 only)
1. Do Step 1 for a 943 only. Remove bolt (1) and the washer that hold the fuel injection pump drive gear (2) in place. Use tooling (A) to remove drive gear (2) from the shaft.
2. Remove three nuts (3) that hold the fuel pump drive to the timing gear plate.
3. Remove bolt (4), the lock and washer that hold idler gear (5) in place, and remove idler gear (5).
4. Use the 1P510 Driver Group from tooling (A) to remove the bearing from idler gear (5).
5. Use a piece of wire to hold hydraulic pump (7) when the timing gear plate is removed.
6. Remove bolt (6) and timing gear plate (8) from the cylinder block.
Install Timing Gears And Plate
1. Clean the old gasket from the contact surfaces of the timing gear plate and cylinder block. Cut the gasket even with the bottom face of the cylinder block. Put 5H2471 Gasket Cement on the bottom of the gasket where the gasket makes contact with the gasket for the oil pan.
2. Put timing gear plate (1) in position on the cylinder block, and install the four bolts that hold the plate in place.
3. Use tooling (A) to install the bearing in the idler gear. Install the bearing even with the chamfer in the gear bore.
4. Install idler gear (2) on the shaft. Install the washer, lock and bolt that hold the idler gear in place.
5. Install three nuts (3) that hold the pump drive to the timing gear plate.
6. Put fuel injection pump drive gear (4) or the automatic timing advance in position, and install the washer and bolt that hold it in place. Do not tighten the bolt at this time.
NOTE: It will be necessary to make a setting of the fuel injection timing after the camshaft is installed. See Install Automatic Timing Advance for the procedure to make a setting of the fuel injection timing. The No. 1 piston is at the top center compression position (TDC) when the "C" mark on the camshaft gear is in alignment with the "C" mark on the camshaft gear as shown.
