3204 VEHICULAR ENGINE FOR 943 & 953 TRACK-TYPE LOADERS Caterpillar

Camshaft

Usage:

Remove Camshaft

START BY:

a. remove valve lifters

b. remove timing gear cover

NOTE: Three different camshaft designs have been used from the first through currecnt production models. Each of the three designs uses a different type of tach drive. The order of the design sequence is as follows: 1W6276, 2W310 and 2W1337.

1W6276

2W310

2W1337

The latest camshaft design, the 2W1337, was installed on the 943 Loader effective with serial number 10X4889. The effective serial number for the 953 is 45V34789. The 2W1337 Camshaft gear is 20% wider than the former gears. A new front timing gear cover is needed for additional camshaft gear clearance.

When a new camshaft and camshaft gear are installed, a new hydraulic pump gear and spacer must be used. This is necessary to give the correct clearance between the pump pilot and the camshaft gear. It is not necessary to install the new camshaft parts when the new hydraulic pump gear and spacer are installed.

A new camshaft and camshaft gear can be installed without the installation of a new crankshaft gear, but a new or reworked front housing must be used. Also a new crankshaft gear can be installed without the installation of a new camshaft and camshaft gear or a new front housing.

1W6276

1. If necessary, remove the tach drive stud (1) from the 1W6276 Camshaft group. Use tool (A).

2. Turn the camshaft until the holes in gear (2) are in alignment with the camshaft bolts (3).

NOTE: To keep the engine timing correct during removal and installation of the camshaft, put a mark on the teeth of the idler gear and camshaft gear at location (X). Put a mark on the teeth of the camshaft gear and crankshaft gear at location (Y).

3. Remove bolts (3), the lock and the thrust plate.

4. Remove the camshaft and gears from the cylinder block.

NOTE: The camshaft and gear are available as a unit only. If necessary, use a press to remove the gear from the camshaft.

Install Camshaft

NOTICE

Install the camshaft gear with the timing mark away from the camshaft.

1. Heat the camshaft gear to a maximum temperature of 315°C (600°F), and install the gear on the camshaft. Make sure the groove in the camshaft gear is in alignment with the key in the camshaft.

2. Put clean engine oil on the camshaft bearing surfaces and 2P2506 Thread Lubricant on the camshaft lobes. Very carefully install camshaft and gear (1) in the cylinder block. Extra care is necessary because any damage to the camshaft bearings can cause a loss of engine oil pressure. Make sure the marks on the idler gear and the crankshaft gear are in alignment with the marks on the camshaft gear.

3. Turn the camshaft, and make sure the "C" mark on the crankshaft gear is in alignment with the "C" mark on the camshaft gear as shown.

4. Install thrust plate (3), lock (2) and the bolts that hold the camshaft in place.

5. The camshaft end play must be 0.18 ± 0.08 mm (.007 ± .003 in.).

NOTE: If a new gear and camshaft have been installed, it will be necessary to check the engine timing to make sure the timing is correct. See Remove And Install Automatic Timing Advance for the procedure to check engine timing. The No. 1 piston is at the top center compression position (TDC) when the "C" mark on the crankshaft gear is in alignment with the "C" mark on the camshaft gear.

6. Install stud (4) in camshaft assembly 1W6276 with tool (A). Tighten stud (4) to a torque of 15 ± 3 N·m (11 ± 2 lb.ft.).

2W310

7. The torque for the tach drive nut (5) and stud (6) is 135 ± 15 N·m (100 ± 11 lb.ft.) and 55 ± 10 N·m (41 ± 7 lb.ft.), respectively.

2W1337

8. The torque for the tach drive retainer bolts (7) is 55 ± 7 N·m (41 ± 5 lb.ft.).

END BY:

a. install timing gear cover

b. install valve lifters
