Exhaust Manifold - Remove and Install - Three-Piece Exhaust Manifold
Start By:
- Remove the turbocharger. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Turbocharger - Remove".
- Remove the tube assembly that supplies the turbocharger with engine oil.

Illustration 1 g00935235 - Remove bolts (1) in order to remove the exhaust manifold.
- Remove the exhaust manifold gaskets from the cylinder head and the exhaust manifolds.
- If necessary, remove exhaust manifold (4) and exhaust manifold (2) from exhaust manifold (3). Clean the ends of the exhaust manifolds for reassembly.

Required Tools | |||
Tool | Part Number | Part Description | Qty |
A | - | Guide Bolt (M10 X 1.5 by 100 mm) |
4 |
B | 4C-9507 | Retaining Compound | - |
Note: Improper installation of the exhaust manifold can result in a cracked exhaust manifold. The exhaust manifold must be carefully centered on the guide bolts while the bolts are tightened.
Note: If an exhaust manifold bolt has become loose, or an exhaust manifold bolt must be loosened, all of the exhaust manifold bolts must be loosened. The exhaust manifold bolts must be tightened in the correct sequence and to the correct torque.
- Install Tooling (A) in the cylinder head in Hole (X).
Note: Do Not use any sealant on the exhaust manifold gaskets.
Note: New bolts have sealant to the first
13 mm (0.5 inch) of the threads. In order to reuse the old bolts, clean the old sealant from the bolts and apply Tooling (B) to the bolts. - Position the exhaust manifold gaskets on the guide bolts in the cylinder head. Assemble exhaust manifold (4) and exhaust manifold (2) to exhaust manifold (3). Position the assembled exhaust manifold on the guide bolts. Install bolts (1) in order to secure the exhaust manifolds to the cylinder head.
- Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of
12 N·m (9 lb ft) . Tighten the bolts in the sequence that is shown in Illustration 2. - Remove Tooling (A). Install the remaining bolts (1) and tighten the bolts to a torque of
12 N·m (9 lb ft) . - Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of
33 N·m (24 lb ft) . Tighten the bolts in the sequence that is shown in Illustration 2. - Tighten the bolts (1) again to a torque of
33 N·m (24 lb ft) . - Install the tube assembly that supplies the turbocharger with engine oil.
