NOTICE |
---|
Keep all parts clean from contaminants. Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life. |
- Remove the guards that cover the flywheel.
- Remove the drive coupling from the flywheel.
- Rotate the crankshaft until the dash marks on the crankshaft and on flywheel (1) are at the 12 o'clock position. This will place tapped hole (2) for Tooling (B) at the 12 o'clock position.

- Remove the front crankshaft inspection covers from both sides of the engine.
NOTICE |
---|
If the timing pin is used to prevent crankshaft rotation when the flywheel is removed, damage to the engine can result. Do not use the timing pin to prevent crankshaft rotation. Use the correct procedure. |
- To prevent crankshaft rotation, place Tooling (C) under the connecting rod.
- Remove two bolts (4) . Install Tooling (A) in the bolt holes.
- Attach Tooling (B) and a suitable lifting device at the 12 o'clock position to flywheel (1) . The weight of flywheel (1) and ring gear (3) is approximately 521 kg (1150 lb).
- Remove remaining bolts (4) from flywheel (1) . Raise the suitable lifting device in order to support the flywheel upon removal.
- To remove the flywheel, pry between the rear housing and the flywheel. Remove flywheel (1) from Tooling (A) .
- Remove Tooling (A) from the crankshaft.
- Remove Tooling (C) from the connecting rod.
- Install the crankshaft inspection covers.
- Inspect ring gear (3) for wear and/or damage. If the ring gear will be replaced, remove bolts (5) that attach ring gear (3) to flywheel (1) .

- If ring gear (3) was removed from the flywheel, use the following procedure to install the ring gear:
- Make sure that the surface of flywheel (1) for mounting ring gear (3) is clean, dry, and smooth.
- Place the ring gear on the flywheel so that the teeth of the gear will be toward the front of the engine.
Note: Two ring gears are available. One ring gear is for counterclockwise rotation and the other ring gear is for clockwise rotation. Make sure that the correct ring gear is installed.
- Install bolts (5) .

- To prevent crankshaft rotation, place Tooling (C) under the connecting rod.
- Install Tooling (A) in the crankshaft.
- Install Tooling (B) and a suitable lifting device in tapped hole (2) on flywheel (1) . The weight of flywheel (1) and ring gear (3) is approximately 521 kg (1150 lb).

- Make sure that the mounting surface for the flywheel is clean, dry, and smooth.
- Position the flywheel onto Tooling (A) . Inspect the alignment of the bolt holes. The rear of the flywheel has four holes that are unequally spaced. The holes provide clearance for the heads of the bolts that attach the adapter (crankshaft seal) to the crankshaft. The bolt heads and the holes in the flywheel must be aligned.
- Move the flywheel to the mounting surface.
- Apply Tooling (D) to the washers and the contact surfaces of bolts (4) .
- Install bolts (4) . Remove Tooling (A) from the crankshaft. Install the remaining bolts. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 700 ± 30 N·m (516 ± 22 lb ft). Then tighten the bolts for an additional one-half turn (180 degrees).
- Remove Tooling (B) from flywheel (1) .
- Remove Tooling (C) from the connecting rod.
- Install the crankshaft inspection covers.
- Install the drive coupling for the flywheel.
- Install the guards that cover the flywheel.
