There may be several specific messages on your equipment. The exact location and a description of the messages are reviewed in this section. Please become familiar with all of the messages.

Ensure that all of the messages are legible. Clean the messages or replace the messages if the words cannot be read or if the illustrations are not visible. Use a cloth, water, and soap for cleaning the messages. Do not use solvents, gasoline, or other harsh chemicals. Solvents, gasoline, or harsh chemicals could loosen the adhesive that secures the messages. The messages that are loosened could drop off of the engine.

Replace any message that is damaged or missing. If a message is attached to a part of the engine that is replaced, install a new message on the replacement part. Your Caterpillar dealer can provide new messages.

------ WARNING! ------

Do not operate or work on this engine unless you have read and understand the instructions and warnings in the Operation and Maintenance Manual. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the warnings could result in injury or death. Contact any Caterpillar dealer for replacement manuals. Proper care is your responsibility.

NOTICE

To prevent damage to generator:

Storage and startup procedure

Keep generator in a clean, dry place. Connect space heater. Operate space heater for a minimum of 24 hours before starting. Refer to SEHS9124 for other drying methods. Measure insulation resistance with megger before starting, following steps 1 through 14.

Recommended insulation test procedure:

1. Take generator out of service.

2. Visually inspect for moisture. If moisture exists, do not megger. Dry unit first. Refer to Special Instruction, SEHS9124, "Cleaning and Drying of Electric Set Generators" for drying procedure.

3. Inspect insulation to determine what equipment will be tested by the 142-5055 megger .

4. Discharge the capacitance of the windings.

5. Disconnect "T0" from ground.

6. Disconnect regulator sensing lead wires (20,22,24).

7. Disconnect EMCP (I or II) transformer leads (T1,T2,T3).

8. Disconnect any sensing leads from switchgear or other devices.

9. Connect megger tester red "+" lead to unpainted area on generator frame.

10. Connect megger tester black "-" lead to (T0).

11. Set voltage to 500 volts for generators that are 600 volts or less. Set voltage to 1000 volts for generators that are more than 600 volts.

12. Use the 30 - 60 time resistance method.

13. Evaluate reading. See SEHS9124 for instruction.

14. Discharge leads and windings before disconecting megger leads by switching megger to OFF.

For additional information, refer to SEHS9124 in the service manual for megger testing procedure and repair procedure.

(4) Neutral Floating

This message is located on the rear cover of the generator.
