Removal Procedure

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
- Remove springs (15) from turbocharger cover (16). Remove turbocharger cover (16) from turbocharger (9) .
Note: The turbocharger cover is constructed of fiberglass. Wear a mask when the turbocharger cover is removed.

- Remove hose that connects the air cleaner to the turbocharger.
- Support the exhaust piping. Remove the bolts on the flange of exhaust elbow (4) for the exhaust piping.
- Remove nut (11) from bolt (13). Remove bolt (14) for the exhaust manifold. Remove bolts (3) from exhaust elbow (4). Remove bracket (2) .
- Remove nuts (17) for exhaust elbow (4). Remove exhaust elbow (4) and the gasket. If necessary, remove studs (18) .
- Remove bolts (8) from the flange of oil supply line (7) .
- Remove the pipe connection from the union for oil supply line (7). Use a wrench to hold the union while the pipe connection is removed. Remove adapter (10), if necessary.
- Remove bolts (22) from flange (21) of the oil drain line. Remove bolts (24) from the flange, if necessary. Loosen hose clamp (23), if necessary. Remove the oil drain line from the turbocharger.
- Remove four nuts (19) from studs (16) that hold turbocharger (9) onto exhaust manifold (1). Remove the turbocharger from the exhaust manifold. Remove gasket (6) .
