Removal Procedure
Start By:
- Drain the cooling system. If the engine uses diesel engine antifreeze/coolant, refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant (DEAC) - Change". If the engine uses extended life coolant, refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant (ELC) - Change".
- Remove the turbocharger, if equipped. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Turbocharger - Remove".
NOTICE |
---|
Keep all parts clean from contaminants. Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life. |
NOTICE |
---|
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
- Loosen the hose clamps (4) for the coolant inlet and the coolant outlet. Remove the coolant hoses (3) from the exhaust manifold (2) .

- Remove the four bolts that secure the exhaust manifold to the cylinder head. Begin at the ends of the exhaust manifold (2) and work toward the center.
- Remove the exhaust manifold (2) from the cylinder head.
- Remove gaskets (1) from the cylinder head. Discard the gaskets.
Installation Procedure
- Clean the flange face of the cylinder head. Install two M10 x 170mm studs into the cylinder head. Slide two new gaskets (1) onto the alignment bolts.

- Place the exhaust manifold (2) into position on the alignment bolts. Install the hoses (3). Tighten the hose clamps (4). Install the exhaust manifold into the final position.
Note: The gaskets for the exhaust manifold do not use a sealing compound.
- Ensure that all of the bolts (5) are clean. Install the bolts into the holes that do not have the alignment bolts. Remove the alignment bolts and install the remainder of the bolts (5) .
- Tighten the bolts. Begin at the center of the exhaust manifold and work toward the ends. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 52 N·m (38 lb ft).
