起动马达用于转动发动机飞轮,使得发动机能够起动。

起动马达有一个电磁阀 (2)。 当起动开关被激活时,电流就会流经电磁阀的绕组。 电磁阀芯将会移动,从而通过一个机械连杆推动小齿轮 (4)。 这将使小齿轮与发动机飞轮的齿圈啮合。 在电磁阀 (2) 内电触点使蓄电池与起动马达之间的电路接通之前,起动马达小齿轮 (4)已与齿圈啮合。 当蓄电池与起动马达之间的电路完全接通时,小齿轮 (4)将转动发动机飞轮。 离合器为起动马达提供保护。 发动机不会将起动马达转得太快。 当松开起动开关时,小齿轮 (4)将移离飞轮齿圈。
起动马达通过下述两种方法加以保护,以防损坏:
- 当发动机正在运转时,起动马达被保护,防其与发动机接合。 如果发动机转速不是0,此控制特点将使起动马达无法与发动机接合。
- 起动马达被保护,防止连续起动。 例如,发动机起动后,如果操作者将钥匙把持在起动(Start)位置,发动机转速达到300 rpm后,起动马达电磁阀将分离。
