Start By:

  1. Remove the undercarriage frame assembly. Refer to the manufacturer's Disassembly and Assembly Manual for the removal of the undercarriage frame.


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Remove all of the grease from the swing gear and bearing. Put the grease in a suitable container for storage or disposal.

    Typical Example

  1. Put an alignment mark on swing gear and bearing (1) and the undercarriage frame assembly for installation purposes. Use Tooling (B) and a socket of the appropriate size to remove 38 bolts (2) and the spacers that hold swing gear and bearing (1) to the undercarriage frame assembly.

  1. Fasten Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to swing gear and bearing (1), as shown. The bolts and spacers that are used to hold the upper structure to the undercarriage frame assembly can be used to install Tooling (A) .

  1. Remove the swing gear and bearing. The weight of the swing gear and bearing is approximately 428 kg (944 lb).

  1. Place tape over the sealing surfaces of the dust seals, the inner race, and the outer race. This will prevent cleaning solvent from entering the cross sections of the dust seals. Thoroughly clean the swing gear and bearing.

  1. Remove dust seals (3) and (4) from the outer race and the inner race of the swing gear and bearing.

  1. Clean the sealing grooves of the inner race and outer race with fine grit sandpaper. Use a cleaning solvent to clean the seal grooves. Make sure that the seal grooves are thoroughly clean and dry prior to installing new dust seals.

  1. Put an alignment mark on swing gear and bearing (1) and the undercarriage frame assembly for installation purposes.

  1. Fasten Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to swing gear and bearing (1), as shown. Put a slight lifting tension on the swing gear and bearing.

  1. Use Tooling (B) to remove bolts (2) and the spacers that secure swing gear and bearing (1) to the undercarriage frame assembly.

  1. Carefully remove the swing gear and bearing from the undercarriage frame assembly. The weight of the swing gear and bearing is approximately 454 kg (1000 lb).

Start By:

  1. Remove all of the grease from the swing gear and bearing. Put the grease in a suitable container for storage or disposal.

  1. Put an alignment mark on swing gear and bearing (1) and on the undercarriage frame assembly for assembly purposes. Attach Tooling (A) to swing gear and bearing (1), as shown. Attach a suitable lifting device to Tooling (A). Apply slight lifting tension to the swing gear and bearing.

  1. Use Tooling (B) in order to remove bolts (2) and the spacers that hold swing gear and bearing (1) to the undercarriage frame.

  1. Remove swing gear and bearing (1). The weight of the swing gear and bearing is approximately 280 kg (615 lb).

    Note: Inner dust seal (3) and outer dust seal (4) may have been installed dry in the swing gear and bearing or inner dust seal (3) and outer dust seal (4) may have been bonded to the swing gear and bearing.

  1. Remove inner dust seal (3) and outer dust seal (4) from the swing gear and bearing.

  1. Clean the seal grooves of the inner dust seal and the outer dust seal with a fine grit sandpaper. Use a cleaning solvent to clean the sealing grooves. Make sure that the seal grooves are thoroughly clean and dry prior to installing the new dust seals.
