Normal mode is used during normal engine operation. When you are in normal mode, the Caterpillar Monitoring System performs the following operations:

  • A monitoring system that is operating properly will perform a self test whenever the keyswitch is turned to the ON position. The outputs also operate for a brief instant. See Testing and Adjusting, "System Self Test ".

  • The main display module continuously watches engine systems. The value for a condition may also be shown in the display area.

Operator Modes

In the normal mode, the six digit display area (2) shows various types of information via the Operator Modes. A list of possible operator modes is shown in Systems Operation, "Modes Of Operation".

When the main display module enters the normal mode, the default condition is shown on the six digit display. This condition is normally the engine rpm. See "Service Meter Parameter" for more information.

The scroll switch is used when the operator parameters are showing. The scroll switch connects to contact 23. The scroll switch will scroll the display through the operator parameters that are available. Releasing the scroll switch will stop the scrolling on the currently shown parameter.

Mode numbers are not displayed when the operator parameters are scrolling. The most common modes are shown below:

  • The Service Meter Parameter shows values on the six digit display area, and the service meter symbol is ON.

  • The DC System Voltage parameter shows values on the six digit display area, and the symbol for volts is ON.

  • The Digital Tachometer Parameter shows values on the six digit display area, and the "RPM" symbol is ON.

  • The Diagnostic Scrolling Mode shows diagnostic codes on the six digit display area.

See Systems Operation, "Modes Of Operation" for information on operator modes.

Service Meter Parameter

Display Area

The Service Meter Parameter is shown in illustration 2. The engine ECM records the total number of hours of engine operation. This information is sent to the Main Display Module via the CAT data link. The total operating hours of the engine are shown on the six digit display area. The service meter symbol is ON in order to indicate that the display is functioning as a service meter. The value is continuously updated while the engine is operating. Use the SCROLL Switch in order to toggle between the Digital Tachometer Parameter and the Service Meter Parameter.

DC System Voltage Parameter

Display Area

The DC System Voltage Parameter is shown in illustration 3. When "VOLTS" is showing, the system voltage is displayed on the six digit display area. The main display module receives information for system voltage from the +Battery terminal.

Digital Tachometer Parameter

Illustration 4g00629397

Display Area

The Digital Tachometer Parameter is shown in figure 4. When "RPM" is showing, the engine speed is displayed on the six digit display area. The Main Display Module receives the engine speed information directly from a speed sensor. Use the SCROLL Switch to toggle between the Digital Tachometer Parameter and the Service Meter Parameter.

Diagnostic Scrolling Mode

(6) Failure mode identifier (FMI)

Scrolling mode allows service personnel or an operator to see diagnostic codes that were stored by the main display module. These diagnostic codes are also seen when the main display module is in the service mode. The diagnostic code in this mode can not be cleared.

The diagnostic codes momentarily scroll on the display area upon entering the scrolling mode. The MID is shown first as each diagnostic code is shown for about one second. Then, the corresponding CID and the corresponding FMI is shown for about two seconds. "End" appears when the last diagnostic code has been shown. The diagnostic codes are then shown again. The display shows "- - -" when the main display module has no diagnostic codes.

The "SERV CODE" functions as a fault present indicator in scrolling mode. The fault that has caused a diagnostic code to be shown currently is present when "SERV CODE" is ON. "SERV CODE" is OFF when the fault is not present, but the fault has previously occurred.
