SUBJECT: INSTRUCTIONS FOR MACHINES CONFIGURED WITH UPDATED GOVERNOR MOTORS

PROBLEM:

The governor motors have been updated with new software in order to prevent motor failures on certain Excavators. The new governor motors are available for field replacement. The new part numbers are listed in Table 1.

There is a new problem with the updated governor motors. It is possible that the engine may not shut down when the starter key switch is turned to the OFF position on the machines with an updated governor motor. There is an error in the software for the governor motor.

SOLUTION:

If the engine does not shut down after turning the starter key switch to the OFF position, use the instructions that follow in order to shut down the engine. The software will be updated as soon as possible.

Shutting Down The Engine On Machines Configured With The First Updated Governor

  1. If the engine does not shut down after turning the starter key switch to the OFF position, wait for 90 seconds and turn the starter key switch to the OFF position again. If the engine shuts down, the governor motor is functioning properly.
  2. If the same problem occurs again, repeat Step 1.
  3. If the engine does not shut down after a repeating Step 1, the governor motor has probably failed. Use the fuel shut off valve in order to shut down the engine. Replace the governor motor with a new second updated governor motor.

Shutting Down The Engine On Machines Configured With The Second Updated Governor

  1. If the engine does not shut down after turning the starter key switch to the OFF position, return the starter key switch to the ON position and immediately return the starter key switch to the OFF position. The engine will shut down.

Updated software for the Engine Control Module (ECM) will soon be available for machines configured with the second updated governor motor. The new software will eliminate the problem. The software will be released and applicable to machines produced until July 15, 2003.

For machines configured with the first updated governor motor, replace the first updated governor with the second updated governor. Flash the ECM with the updated software. Caterpillar?s Service Information System (SIS) may be used to download flash files.

For machines configured with the second updated governor motor, flash the ECM with the updated software. Caterpillar?s Service Information System (SIS) may be used to download flash files.

The first and the second updated governor motor part numbers are listed in Table 1. The effectivity of the first updated governor motor is listed in Table 2. The effectivity of the second updated governor motor is listed in Table 3.
