Coolant May Overflow During Engine Warm Up on Certain 785C and 789C Off-Highway Trucks {1070, 1380} Caterpillar

Coolant May Overflow During Engine Warm Up on Certain 785C and 789C Off-Highway Trucks {1070, 1380}

Usage:

789C 2BW
Off-Highway Truck/Tractor
785C (S/N: APX1-UP)
789C (S/N: 2BW1-UP)

Introduction

The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.

Problem

The new turbocharger water line routing changes to 785C and 789C off-highway trucks may result in coolant overflow after cold engine startup.

The new water line designs can cause air from the shunt tank to be transferred into the radiator when the water regulators are closed, the air is introduced to the engine when the regulators open, where it expands and coolant in the shunt tank may vent.

Solution

Sites which have implemented the 486-8442 Turbocharger Water Lines Gp and are experiencing engine overcooling during seasonal low ambient temperatures should revert to the 163-2615 Turbocharger Water Lines Gp shown in Illustrations 1 and 3.

Sites which are not experiencing engine overcooling during seasonal low ambient temperatures can use the 486-8442 Turbocharger Water Lines Gp shown in Illustration 4, but with the 163-0810 Radiator Gp shown in Illustration 2 which returns turbocharger water into the upper tank on the radiator, not the shunt tank on the top deck.

789C

Sites which have implemented the 386-0474 Turbocharger Water Lines Gp or the 524-6308 Turbocharger Water Lines Gp and are experiencing engine overcooling during seasonal low ambient temperatures should revert to the 175-5270 Turbocharger Water Lines Gp similar to Illustrations 1 and 3.

Sites which are not experiencing engine overcooling during seasonal low ambient temperatures can use the 386-0474 Turbocharger Water Lines Gp or the 524-6308 Turbocharger Water Lines Gp similar to Illustration 4, but with the 145-1225 Radiator Gp similar to Illustration 2 which returns turbocharger water into the upper tank on the radiator, not the shunt tank on the top deck.
