Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace

Usage:

789D SPD
Prior to replacing an electronic control module (ECM), ensure that replacement is necessary. The ECM is seldom the cause of a failure. Always check that power is available at all "+ Battery" contacts of the ECM.

Corrupted configuration software or the wrong software may cause an ECM to report false diagnostic codes. Prior to replacing the ECM, flash the ECM with the correct configuration software to verify that the failure is not related to software.

Note: Prior to replacing an ECM, contact your Technical Communicator.

If the ECM must be replaced, follow these steps:

  1. Connect the Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat® ET).

  2. Note all configurations.

  3. Turn off the disconnect switch and the key start switch.

  4. Disconnect the harness connectors from the ECM.

  5. Verify that the replacement ECM part number is correct.

  6. Install the replacement ECM.

  7. Connect the harness to the ECM.

  8. Turn on the disconnect switch and the key start switches.

  9. Check for correct configurations.

If necessary, use Cat® ET to install the configuration software.

  10. Clear any diagnostic codes that were caused by the previous procedures.

  11. Verify that the ECM operates correctly.
