Configuration of an Electronic Control Module

The tools that are required to configure an electronic control module (ECM) are shown in Table 1.

The Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat® ET) service tool is used to access the configuration screen . A message on the Cat® ET screen of the service tool will give instructions that guide the user through the procedure. Refer to the manual that is provided with the Cat® ET service tool software for more information about Cat® ET.

The fuse and data link connectors panel is located behind the seat on the rear panel of the cab.
(1) VIMS Service Port connector
(2) Cat ET Service Port connector
(3) Ethernet Port connector
(4) 12 VDC Power Receptacle

The ECM must be configured when the ECM has been replaced. The ECM must be configured before a calibration can be started.

Note: The configuration screen is only for machines with an ECM.

A check of the configuration screen could resolve a problem with the machine. A problem with a component could be identified as one of the following items:

  • The component is not installed.

  • The component is installed but a change to the installation is needed to correct a problem.

Follow these instructions to get to the configuration screen:

  1. Connect the communications adapter and the computer to the diagnostic service tool connector.

  2. Start Cat® ET.

  3. Select "File".

  4. Go to "Select ECM".

  5. Choose the "Chassis ECM".

  6. Go to the "Service" menu.

  7. Select "Configuration".

  8. Click "OK".

Note: Certain operations or characteristics can be changed for attachments or preferences.
