Start By:

  1. Remove the rear suspension cylinder.

------ WARNING! ------

High pressure cylinder. Do not remove any parts until pressure has been relieved or personal injury may occur.


------ WARNING! ------

In order to prevent possible personal injury, use a suitable fixture to support the weight of the suspension cylinder. Do not attempt to stand the suspension cylinder on end without the use of a suitable support. Failure to use a suitable support fixture could result in injury or death to personnel in this area.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Ensure that the nitrogen has been discharged from the suspension cylinder. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, UENR2267, Rear Suspension (Cylinder) - Purge and Charge.

  2. Use Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to place the rear suspension cylinder in a vertical position. Support the rear suspension cylinder with a suitable fixture. The weight of the rear suspension cylinder is approximately 1023 kg (2255 lb).

  3. Remove plug (1) and drain oil into a suitable container.

  4. Remove bolts (2) and valve guard (3).

  5. Remove charging valve (4) and plug (5).

  6. Remove clamps not shown on bellow (6).

  7. Remove bellow (6).

    Note: When removing bolts (7) support head to keep from falling.

  8. Remove bolts (7).

  9. Use Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to housing assembly (8). The weight of the housing assembly (8) is approximately 480 kg (1058 lb).

  10. Carefully raise the housing assembly (8) from head (9).

  11. Remove bolts (10).

  12. Use a suitable lifting device to remove head (11). The weight of head (11) is approximately 36 kg (79 lb).

  13. Remove balls (12) from rod assembly (13).

  14. Use a suitable lifting device to remove head (9). The weight of head (9) is approximately 77 kg (170 lb).

  15. Remove O-ring seals (14) and back-up rings (15) from head (9).

  16. Remove rod seal (16), (17), and wiper seal (18).
