- Bearing Setting Procedure for Input and Output Shafts.
- Assure that the bearing cups and cones are seated against the respective housing and shaft shoulders before assembly of the other components. Verify with a
0.038 mm (0.0015inch) thick feeler gauge. - With axis of gear or shaft in the vertical position, assemble gear / cone or shaft / cone assembly into case.
- Insert two dowels 180 degrees from each other in housing.
- Assemble bearing cup cage to the housing with shim pack and O-ring seal (If specified). Insert bolts and tighten to specified torque. ( Make sure that cage does not bind in housing).
- Rotate shaft, while lightly tapping with mallet. a minimum of three times or until rolling resistance diminishes to a steady level.
- With a dial indicator gauge or other suitable measuring device, measure the endplay by lifting the gear or shaft.
- Repeat steps (D) through (F) until endplay is within the desired range.
- Rotate shaft to verify that no bearings are binding.
- Assure that the bearing cups and cones are seated against the respective housing and shaft shoulders before assembly of the other components. Verify with a
- Desired bearing setting is
0.152 mm (0.006 inch) . - Maximum bearing setting is
0.203 mm (0.008 inch) . - Set preload on bearing according to the procedure above. Tighten bolts (8).
- Turn the input transfer case over.
