Relief Valve (Main, Vibratory) - Test and Adjust

Usage:

CB16 HP5

------ WARNING! ------

Diesel engine exhaust contains products of combustion which may cause personal injury.

Always start and operate the engine in a well ventilated area, and, if in an enclosed area, vent the exhaust to the outside.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from rotating and moving parts. Stay clear of all rotating and moving parts.

Never attempt adjustments while the machine is moving or the engine is running unless otherwise specified.

The machine must be parked on a level surface and the engine stopped.

Attach a "Do Not Operate" or similar warning tag to the start switch and controls before servicing, repairing, or making adjustments to the machine.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement.

Sudden movement of the machine can cause injury to persons on or near the machine.

To prevent injury or death, make sure that the area around the machine is clear of personnel and obstructions before operating the machine.

------ WARNING! ------

Injury to personnel can result if they are not in the operator's view. Allow only essential personnel near the machine, and make sure the personnel are in the operator's view when testing, to prevent injury. Make sure checks are done in an open area.

------ WARNING! ------

To prevent injury or death, never work under a machine while a test is being performed.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.

Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.

Make sure all of the attachments have been lowered, and the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  15. Press vibratory control switch (31) on propel control lever (1). The vibratory control switch must be held in the ON position for at least 2 seconds for the vibratory system to activate.

  16. Watch pressure on Tool (A1). High pressure will register on the gauge connected to port "Mb" (14). An initial pressure reading will register on the gauge for a brief period, and then the pressure reduces to operating pressure. Record the initial pressure reading as the high amplitude relief pressure. Refer to the "Specifications" section for the high amplitude relief pressure.

Note: If testing the front vibratory pump, high pressure will register on the gauge connected to port "Md" (13).

Note: The force that is needed to overcome the inertia of the weights causes the pressure in the vibration system to momentarily reach the relief valve setting. This pressure spike should be the initial pressure reading.

  17. Use vibratory control switch (31) to shut off the vibratory system.

  18. Use vibratory frequency switch (23) to place the drums in the high frequency/low amplitude mode.

Note: Two things indicate when the vibratory system is in the high frequency/low amplitude mode. First, "Vibe Frequency Mode High" will appear on the display. Second, two of the LEDs next to vibratory frequency switch (23) will be illuminated.

  19. Press vibratory control switch (31) on the propel control lever. The vibratory control switch must be held in the ON position for at least 2 seconds for the vibratory system to activate.

  20. Watch the pressure on Tool (A1). High pressure will register on the gauge connected to port "Ma" (12). An initial pressure reading will register on the gauge for a brief period, and then the pressure reduces to operating pressure. Record the initial pressure reading as the low amplitude relief pressure. Refer to the "Specifications" section for the low amplitude relief pressure.

Note: If testing the front vibratory pump, high pressure will register on the gauge connected to port "Mc" (15).

Note: The force that is needed to overcome the inertia of the weights causes the pressure in the vibration system to momentarily reach the relief valve setting. This pressure spike should be the initial pressure reading.

  21. Use vibratory control switch (31) to stop the vibratory system.

  22. Place the engine in ECO mode or in low idle.

  23. Move parking brake switch (2) to the ON position.

  24. Move engine start switch (8) to the OFF position.

  25. If the pressures are within the specified range, go to the next step. If the pressures are outside the specified range, perform the adjustment procedure.

  26. Remove both sets of Tool (A) from the vibratory pump.

  27. Remove Tool (G) from brake supply hose assembly (11) at both drum propel final drives. Remove Tool (F) from the brake inlet port at both drum propel final drives. Connect the brake supply hose to the brake inlet ports on the propel final drives.

  28. Remove tooling from diagnostic connector (16).

  29. Close engine compartment door (10) on the right side of machine and secure latch (9).

Adjustment Procedure
