785G Off-Highway Truck Caterpillar

Battery Disconnect Switch

Usage:

785G RTL

NOTICE

Do not turn off the battery disconnect switch until the indicator lamp has turned off. If the switch is turned off when the indicator lamp is illuminated the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) system will not purge the DEF. If the DEF does not purge, DEF could freeze and damage the pump and lines.

NOTICE

Never move the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position while the engine is operating. Serious damage to the electrical system could result.

Wait to Disconnect Lamp - Do not turn off the battery power disconnect switch until light (2) has been turned off. If the switch is turned off when the light is illuminated, then the DEF system will not purge and DEF could freeze and damage the pump and lines.

Battery Disconnect Switch - The battery disconnect switch can be used to disconnect the battery from the machine electrical system.

OFF - To disconnect the electrical system, turn the battery disconnect switch counterclockwise to the OFF position.

ON - To activate the electrical system, turn the battery disconnect switch clockwise to the ON position. The battery disconnect switch must be turned to the ON position before you can start the engine.

Turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position and place a padlock on the switch to secure the switch in the OFF position.

Turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position and place a padlock on the switch, if the machine is not in operation for an extended period of a month or more. Placing a padlock on the switch will prevent the battery from being discharged. The following problems can cause battery discharge:

  • Short circuits

  • Current draw via some components

Note: The battery disconnect switch does not release hydraulic pressure from the secondary steering system or hydraulic pressure from the automatic retarder control system. To release the hydraulic pressure, move the engine start switch to the OFF position. Moving the engine start switch to the OFF position will activate a solenoid valve to release the hydraulic pressure from the accumulators.

Verify that the engine is fully operational before cranking the engine to ensure that no damage will occur to the engine. Do not crank an engine that is not fully operational.

Perform the following procedure to check the functionality of the battery disconnect switch:

  1. With the battery disconnect switch in the ON position, verify that electrical components in the operator compartment are functioning. Verify that the hour meter is displaying information. Verify that the engine will crank.

  2. Turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.

  3. Verify that the following items are not functioning: the electrical components in the operator station, the hour meter, and the engine starter. If any of the items continue to function with the battery disconnect switch in the OFF position, contact your Cat dealer.
