Table 1 lists system voltage circuit diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).

Table 1
Communication Gateway #1 ECM (VIMSTM Main) ECM
(MID 161)
DTC(1)  DTC Description  System Response
168-0  Electrical System Voltage Valid, But Above Normal  The ECM activates this DTC when the system voltage is above normal operating range.
Starting is disabled
168-1  Electrical System Voltage Valid, But Below Normal  The ECM activates this diagnostic code when the data is valid, but below normal operating range.
Voltage below 18 VDC will shut off the VIMS function
(1) DTCs are shown as CID-FMI

Possible -0 and -1 DTC Causes Are:

  • Faulty voltage regulator

  • Jump starting with a welder

  • Failed ECM

Troubleshooting Test Steps  Values  Results

1. Identify Active DTC Associated With the System Voltage Circuit

DTC is not present

OK - DTC is not present.
STOP

Not OK - DTC is present.

Go to Step 2.

2. Check Connections

A. Inspect the circuit harness connectors.

Connectors are:
*Clean
*Secure
*In good condition

OK - Connections are good.
FMI 0 diagnostic code, go to Step 3.
FMI 1 diagnostic code, go to Step 4.

Not OK - A connection problem exists.

Repair: Correct any connection problem.
Verify that the problem is corrected.

STOP
Begin -0 DTC Troubleshooting Here

3. Check the System Voltage At the ECM

A. Turn key start switch and disconnect switch on.

B. Start and run the engine at high idle.

C. At the ECM harness connector, insert a 7X-1710 Multimeter Probe along the power contact, insert the other probe along the return contact.

D. Measure the voltage.

E. While observing the voltage measurement, wiggle the ECM harness connectors. Gently move the wires around.

Voltage is between 21.5 VDC and 24.8 VDC

OK - Voltage is correct.
Go to Step 4.

Not OK - The voltage is greater than 24.8 VDC. The alternator operation is not correct.

Repair: Repair the charging system(1).

STOP
Begin -1 DTC Troubleshooting Here

E. While observing the voltage measurement, wiggle the harness connectors. Gently move the wires around.

Voltage is between 21.5 VDC and 24.8 VDC

OK - Voltage is correct.

Go to Step 4.

Not OK - The voltage is less than 21.5 VDC. The alternator operation is not correct.

Repair: Repair the charging system(1).

Go to Step 4.

5. Check If the DTC Remains

A. Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each power supply circuit wire.

B. Reconnect all harness connectors. Make sure that the connectors are fully seated and the clips are fastened securely.

C. Turn key start switch and disconnect switch on.

D. Clear all DTCs.

E. Operate the machine.

F. Stop machine and engage safety lock lever.

G. Check if the DTC is active.

DTC is not present

OK - DTC does not exist at this time. The DTC may have been caused by a poor connection. Resume machine operation.

STOP

Not OK - DTC exists, the ECM may have failed.

Repair: Recheck the circuit
Perform this procedure again.
If the DTC remains, contact your Technical Communicator(2).

STOP
