NOTE: | This Program must be administered either before or after failure. In either case the decision whether to apply the Program is made by the dealer. When reporting the repair, use "PS44798" as the Part Number and "7755" as the Group Number. If administered before failure, use "56" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and "T" as the SIMS Description code. If administered after failure, use "96" as the Warranty Claim Description Code, and "Z" as the SIMS Description Code. |

PROBLEM
The camshaft needs to be inspected inspected and possibly replaced on certain C8.7 Marine Engines. The existing camshaft may be rusted which can lead to camshaft or roller follower failure. |

ACTION REQUIRED
Before completing the attached Rework Procedure, please review the safety actions in the Operation and Maintenance Manual. Remove the valve cover and inspect the camshaft. - If rust and pitting is found, compare the condition of the camshaft to the Image 1 and Image 2. Image 1 is not acceptable and the camshaft should be replaced. Image 2 is acceptable and the camshaft should not be replaced. Surface rust covering less than 10 percent of the total base circle is acceptable, pitting is not acceptable. Submit a DSN with pictures and a product status report if additional guidance is needed. - If no rust is found, install the valve cover. Refer to, Special Instruction, REHS9709, "Replacement Procedure For the Camshaft On the C8.7 Marine Engine". Once complete, and if the engine will not be put into service, ensure that the engine is properly stored per SEHS9031, "Storage Procedure for Caterpillar Products". |

- 1.0 hour is allowed for the inspection of the camshaft. - An additional 12.1 hours will be allowed if the camshaft meets the criteria for replacement. Reasonable travel time and mileage is allowed. On vessels with multiple affected engines this service letter should completed on all engines on the vessel on the same trip. Please reference the other engine serial numbers in the claim story. |
