How To Repair Oil Leaks Between Front Housing And Spacer Deck {1221}

Usage:

3176 Truck Engines

The Front Housing-To-Spacer Deck Camshaft Gasket may leak oil. The recommended repair procedure is to install four 9U5177 M8x1.25x16 Heli-Coils® in the spacer deck and reseal using a 4P8165 Gasket (beaded camshaft gasket). The installation of Heli-Coils increases the joint load. The 4P8165 Gasket replaces the 7C8255 Gasket. The repair should be done only after failure or when the engine is disassembled enough to allow access to the front of the spacer deck.

Use the following repair procedure:

1. Disassemble the engine to allow access to the front housing-to-spacer deck camshaft gasket (front of spacer deck).

2. Drill a 8.2 mm (.328 in) hole to a depth of 25.4 ± 1.6 mm (1.0 ± .06 in).

3. Use an 8T2789 Tap and tap to minimum depth of 18.3 mm (.72 in).

NOTE: Use lubricant during the tapping process.

4. Install four 9U5177 M8x1.25x16 Heli-Coils in the spacer deck, where the front housing bolts to the spacer deck. See illustration.

5. Reassemble using a 4P8165 Gasket.

NOTE: Install gasket dry with the "nonbeaded" side toward the spacer deck.
