Usage:
1.1 Liter Family Of Engines
Description of Change: A new exhaust manifold gasket is used in the 1.1 Liter Family of Engines. The new steel gasket has a longer service life than the former graphite gasket.
All engines except those with water cooled exhaust manifolds (such as marine engines) now use new locks under the exhaust manifold bolt heads. Formerly, hard washers were used under the bolt heads. The new locks will help prevent the manifold bolts from loosening.
Adaptable To: The new 7E8772 Exhaust Manifold Gasket is a direct replacement for the former 7C0701 and 2W7204 Exhaust Manifold Gaskets in all applications. The former gaskets are canceled. Two gaskets are required for 3114 Engines and three gaskets are required for 3116 Engines.
The new 0L0364 and 7E9410 Locks replace the former 6V5839 Washers in all applications except engines with water cooled exhaust manifolds. Chart A identifies the quantities of new locks for 3114 Engines and Chart B identifies the quantities of new locks for 3116 Engines.
The new gaskets and locks are in effect with 3114 Engines as follows.
- Vehicular: 2ZF397, 2FG565.
- Industrial: 5EF726.
- Marine: 3ZG116.
- Generator Set: 5JG742, 6AF580.
- Industrial: 5EF726.
The new gaskets and locks are in effect with 3116 Engines as follows.
- Vehicular: 4TF1085, 1CK1668.
- Truck: 7SF1.
- Industrial: 2WG876.
- Marine: 4KG127.
- Generator Set: 2SG935, 1NJ998.
- Truck: 7SF1.
Exhaust Manifold Bolt Tightening Procedure
NOTE: This procedure does not apply to engines with water cooled exhaust manifolds.
Illustration 1. Typical 3114 Engine exhaust manifold. Bolt tightening sequence.
Illustration 2. Typical 3116 Engine exhaust manifold. Bolt tightening sequence.
1. Apply a thin coat of 5P3931 Anti-Seize Compound to the threads of the exhaust manifold bolts.
2. Tighten all the bolts in numerical sequence to a torque of 4 ± 1 N·m (35 ± 9 lb in). See Illustrations 1 and 2.
3. Tighten all the bolts again in numerical sequence to a torque of 45 ± 5 N·m (33 ± 4 lb ft).
4. Bend the lock tabs over the flats of the bolt heads. If necessary, tighten the bolt more until a flat on the bolt head lines up with a lock tab.
NOTE: For engines with water cooled manifolds, apply a thin coat of 5P3931 Anti-Seize Compound to the threads of the exhaust manifold bolts. Then tighten all the bolts to a torque of 55 ± 10 N·m (41 ± 7 lb ft).
