3516B Engine for 994F and 994H Wheel Loaders Caterpillar

Configuration Parameters

Usage:

994F 442
Use this procedure if one of the diagnostic codes in Table 1 is active.

Table 1
Diagnostic Codes Table
Code and Description  Conditions which Generate this Code  System Response
268-2 Programmed Parameter Fault erratic, intermittent, or incorrect  The engine Electronic Control Module (ECM) detects that one or more of the programmable parameters have not been programmed.  The ECM may use a default torque map or the ECM may limit the engine to low idle.
The code is active only.
1495-2 Injector Trim Codes Not Programmed  The engine ECM has detected that one or more of the injector trim codes have not been programmed.  The ECM may use a default torque map or the ECM may limit the engine to low idle.
The code is active only.

System configuration parameters are parameters that affect emissions and power of the engine. Default values for the parameters are programmed at the factory. Some parameters may be changed by the customer to suit the needs of the specific application. Values for these parameters can be viewed on the electronic service tool. Certain configuration parameters are also stamped on the engine information plate.

No password is required for programming a new ECM during the first 100 hours of service life. This 100 hour “free configuration” feature enables the customer to tailor the programmable setpoints to the requirements of the installation. Exceptions are "Fuel Limit" and "Personality Module Mismatch".

Note: If the parameters that are protected with the factory passwords are changed, the Caterpillar warranty may be voided.

Parameter Descriptions

"Personality Module Interlock"

The "Personality Module Interlock" is automatically programmed by the ECM after factory passwords are entered.

"Engine Serial Number"

Program the "Engine Serial Number" to match the engine serial number that is stamped on the engine information plate. The engine serial number is not preprogrammed on a replacement ECM.

"Equipment ID"

"Equipment ID" allows the customer to enter a description into the ECM to identify the engine. A maximum of 17 characters may be entered in the field. This parameter is only for reference by the customer. This parameter is not required.

"Full Load Setting (FLS)"

"FLS" is a number that represents the adjustment to the fuel system that was made at the factory. The adjustment was made to fine-tune the fuel system. The correct value for this parameter is stamped on the engine information plate. Factory passwords are required to change this parameter.

"Full Torque Setting (FTS)"

"FTS" is similar to "FLS". Only change this value if the engine is rerated or if a new ECM is installed. Factory passwords are required. A new ECM or a blank ECM allows one time of programming of the "FTS" without the use of factory passwords. To change the "FTS" after the initial programming, factory passwords are required.

"Fuel Ratio Control (FRC)"

The "Fuel Ratio Control" limit controls the amount of fuel to air ratio. Control is attained by limiting the rack as a function of boost pressure, engine speed, and altitude. The "Fuel Ratio Control" function permits an offset to be applied to the calculation for the altitude. The offset changes the fuel to the air ratio to a richer mixture or a leaner mixture.

"Rated Fuel Position"

This parameter is used to limit the engine power. A factory password is required to change this setting.

"Fuel Correction Factor"

"Fuel Correction Factor" is a programmable offset that is used to improve the accuracy of the calculated fuel usage.

"Engine Cooling System"

This parameter is used as a switch to toggle between the SCAC cooling system, the JWAC cooling system, or the ATAAC cooling system.

"Cold Cylinder Cutout"

The cold cylinder cutout automatically stops fuel injection to cylinders that are not firing. The fuel injection is stopped to the cylinders until the engine reaches operating temperature.

"Ether Control"

Program the "Ether Control" to "Enabled" if an ether injection system is installed on the engine. Enabling the ether injection system allows the ECM to control ether injection. If the engine is not equipped with ether, program this parameter to "Disabled".

"Engine Rotation"

The direction of the engine rotation will be detected upon engine run time. If a new ECM) has been installed on the engine, this parameter must be programmed to the correct setting.

"Injector Codes"

During the manufacturing process, a four-digit code is etched on the top surface of the injectors tappet to designate the trim code of the injector. The ECM uses this number to compensate for manufacturing variations between individual injectors.

Injector Trim Codes

Note: The injector trim code is not part of the "Configuration" screen on Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET). "Injector Codes Calibration" can be found under "Calibrations" in the "Service" menu on Cat ET.

The injector trim code is a number that is found on each of the unit injectors. The ECM uses this number to compensate for manufacturing variations between individual injectors. If you replace any of the unit injectors, reprogram the injector trim codes for the new injectors. Also, if you replace the ECM, reprogram all of the injector trim codes.
