Introduction
ReferenceRefer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Cylinder - Remove and Install" for your machine.
This Special Instruction contains the procedure for installing guards on the front axle steering cylinder hoses.
Safety
Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement. Sudden movement of the machine or release of oil under pressure can cause injury to persons on or near the machine. To help prevent possible injury, perform the procedure that follows before testing and adjusting the hydraulic and steering system: |
Check valves in the hydraulic system may allow pressure to exist in the hydraulic lines after the engine has been stopped. Pressure must be relieved prior to servicing the components of the hydraulic system. Failure to relieve pressure prior to servicing may result in personal injury. |
Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system on this machine after the engine and pump have been stopped. Serious injury can result if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic systems. In order to prevent possible injury, release the hydraulic system pressure before working on any fitting, hose, or hydraulic component. Lower all attachments to the ground before service is started. If the hydraulic system must be serviced, tested, or adjusted with the attachment in the raised position, the attachments and lift cylinders must be supported properly. Always move the machine to a location away from the travel of other machines. Be sure that other personnel are not near the machine when the engine is running and tests or adjustments are being made. |
NOTICE |
---|
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |

Rework Procedure
- Ensure that the machine is properly parked for service. Refer to the Testing and Adjusting manual, "Machine Preparation for Troubleshooting".
- Inspect hole (A) in the bottom of the head end clevis (B) of both steering cylinders. If necessary, use a tap to clean up the threads of bolt hole (A) .

- Remove existing bolt (C) and washer (D) from the flag of pin (E) on the steering cylinder.
Illustration 4 | g02552250 |
- Fit the corresponding cylinder guard over the steering cylinder. Refer to Table 1 through Table 4 for your guard for your specific model.
- For the 16M loosely install bolt (C) and washer (D) through the bolt hole in the top of the guard and into the threaded hole from which bolt (C) was previously removed. No additional spacer or washer is used in this location. For the 120M through 160M AWD machines, loosely install one bolt (9) and one washer (7) in place of the bolt removed in Step 4. For the 14M and the 120M through 160M non-AWD machines, loosely install one bolt (9), one washer (7), and one spacer (1) in place of the bolt removed in Step 4.
- Using one spacer (1), loosely install one bolt (9), and one washer (7) through the bolt hole in the bottom of the guard. The spacer should be installed between the guard and the bottom of the head end clevis (B) of the steering cylinder.
Note: Install bolt (9) in hole inspected in step 2
