E033 Loss of Coolant Flow Derate

Usage:

AD45B CXM
Conditions Which Generate This Code:

The Electronic Control Module (ECM) detects a loss of coolant flow for 30 seconds.

System Response:

The ECM logs the event code.

Note: This event will be deactivated if coolant flow is detected for 2 seconds.

Possible Performance Effect:

E033-2 (Derate)

  • The engine power is derated.

Troubleshooting:

  • There may be a problem with the cooling system.

  • There may be a problem with the coolant flow switch.

Test Step 1. Check for Diagnostic Codes

  1. Connect Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.

  2. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.

  3. Check for diagnostic codes that are active or logged.

Expected Result:

No diagnostic codes are active or logged.

Results:

  • OK - No diagnostic codes are active or logged. There is not a problem with the switch circuit. Proceed to Test Step 2.

  • Not OK - There is a diagnostic code that is active or logged.

Repair: Repair the diagnostic code. Refer to the appropriate diagnostic functional test in this Troubleshooting manual.

Ensure that the repair eliminates the problem.

    STOP

Test Step 2. Check the Cooling System

  1. Verify that the coolant is filled to the proper level. If the coolant level is too low, air will get into the cooling system. Air in the cooling system will cause a reduction in coolant flow.

  2. Check the radiator for a restriction to coolant flow. Check internally for debris, dirt, or deposits on the radiator core. Debris, dirt, or deposits will restrict the flow of coolant through the radiator.

  3. Check the water pump. A water pump with a damaged impeller does not pump enough coolant. Remove the water pump and check for damage to the impeller.

Expected Result:

The cooling system appears to be OK.

Results:

  • OK - The cooling system appears to be in good repair.

Repair: There may be an intermittent electrical problem in the switch circuit. Return the engine to service. Monitor the engine during operation. Ensure that the problem does not recur.

    STOP

  • Not OK - A problem with the cooling system has been found.

    Repair: Repair the problem.

Ensure that the repair eliminates the problem.

    STOP
