  1. Turn the keyswitch (1) for the UPS to the "Bypass" position. Refer to Illustration 2.

Start-up

Preheat Cycle (Flywheel)

The temperature of the flywheel must be at least 30 °C (86 °F) before the start of rotation. If the temperature of the flywheel is below 30 °C (86 °F), a preheat cycle (flywheel) will be automatically initiated. The preheat cycles (flywheel) are initiated when the key is turned to the "On-line" position and the temperature of the flywheel is below 30 °C (86 °F). The preheat cycles (flywheel) are initiated prior to the calibration of the Rotor Position Sensor (RPS) and the temperature of the flywheel is below 30 °C (86 °F).

The armature temperature determines when the preheat cycle will be initiated. If the temperature is below 30 °C (86 °F), the system will calculate a required time of the preheat cycle from 5 minutes (minimum) to 60 minutes (maximum). In addition, a time period for thermal equalization is also determined. The minimum and maximum times for equalization are from 5 to 15 minutes. This time period is added to the end of the preheat cycle in order to allow the internal temperatures to equalize.

Once the preheat cycle is complete, the system will automatically continue with start-up or calibration of the Rotor Position Sensor.

Procedure

  1. Apply facility power to the Input Node of the System. Refer to Illustration 1.

  1. Connect the Output Node of the System to the facility load circuits. Refer to Illustration 1.

  1. Turn the keyswitch (1) to the "Online" position. Refer to Illustration 3.

The system will enter the Bypassed-Auto Start state. The system will begin to charge the flywheel. When the flywheel reaches a rate of 4000 RPM, the system changes to the on-line mode. The system is then operational.

  1. Make sure that the UPS is in the on-line mode by pressing the "Home" soft key (2) that is located on the User Interface Panel. Observe the status of the MMU on the LCD (3) .

  1. Turn keyswitch (1) to the "Online" position. Refer to Illustration 8.

The system will enter the "Bypassed-Auto Start" state.

Observe the status line on the LCD (3). Refer to Illustration 8.

System Bypass Procedure

  1. Turn keyswitch (1) to the Bypass position. Refer to Illustration 9.

  1. Make sure that the UPS is in the Bypass mode by pressing the "Home" soft key (2) that is located on the User Interface Panel. Observe the status line on the LCD (3) .

    NOTICE

If the system does not enter the Bypass mode, Do Not Proceed with this procedure. Equipment damage or load interruption may occur. Contact your Caterpillar Dealer.

  1. Close the Bypass Switch (4). Refer to Illustration 10.

  1. Open the Output Isolation Switch (5). Refer to Illustration 10.

  1. Open the Input Isolation Switch (6). Refer to Illustration 10.

  1. Allow the capacitor banks to bleed down for approximately 5 minutes in order to dissipate any residual energy in the following components: the bus (DC) and armature leads.

Note: Whenever the flywheel is spinning, there is a DC Voltage that is present in the cabinet. The flywheel should be stopped prior to Step 1 of this procedure if de-energizing the cabinet is the objective.
