CID 0168 FMI 01 Electrical System Voltage Below Normal Range - Test

Usage:

769C 01X
This diagnostic code is recorded when the Automatic Retarder Control (ARC) detects a battery voltage of less than 24 DCV. This means that "A1" contact was at less than 24 DCV for more than 20 seconds.

Determine if a battery charger or a welder is being used on the machine. Disconnect the charger or the welder if one is used. Recheck for the diagnostic code. Ensure that the CID 168 / FMI F01 is on hold and that the fault is still present.

  1. CHECK THE BATTERY VOLTAGE.

    1. Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.

    1. Measure the battery voltage at the battery posts.

Expected Results: The voltage should be 24 VDC.

      Results:

      • OK: The ARC could be faulty. Recheck the system before replacing the ARC. The ARC is seldom the cause of a diagnostic code. Proceed to Step 2.

      • No: Replace the battery. If the fault continues proceed to STEP 3.

  1. CHECK THE SYSTEM VOLTAGE AT THE ARC.

    1. Measure the system voltage at connector A between the contacts 1 and 2. The engine must be running at high idle.

Expected Result: The voltage is 24 VDC.

      Results:

OK: The voltage is 24 VDC.

No: Fix the harness by repairing or replacing the harness. If conditions are not resolved proceed to Step 3.

  1. CHECK THE ALTERNATOR.

    1. Start the engine and run the engine at a high idle for several minutes.

    1. Measure the voltage output at the battery posts.

Expected Results: The voltage should be 27 VDC to 29 VDC.

      Results:

      • OK: The battery may be faulty. Proceed to Step 1.

      • No: Repair the alternator or replace the alternator. The voltage regulator is faulty. If conditions are not resolved, proceed to 1.

  1. VERIFY THE FAILURE.

    1. The ARC could be faulty. Recheck the system before replacing the ARC. The ARC is seldom the cause of a diagnostic code.

    1. Control replacement must be done in a specific manner. Specific instructions should be followed. Refer to Testing And Adjusting, "ARC - Replace".

Expected Results: The original condition no longer exists. STOP.

      Results:

      • OK: The original problem is no longer a fault condition. STOP.

      • No: Recheck the system because the original condition still exists. STOP.
