Step 16 is incorrect. Replace Step 16 with the following step.

  1. The following procedure is used to determine the thickness of shims (11) between the spindle and the retainer.

    1. Use Tool (A) to release the parking brake.

    1. Install seven equally spaced retainer bolts (9) in the retainer.

      NOTICE

If it becomes necessary to use an outside hydraulic source to release the parking brake, do not exceed the relief pressure of the parking and secondary brake control valve. Exceeding the relief pressure can damage seals and other parts in the circuit.

    1. Tighten retainer bolts (9) to a torque of 50 N·m (37 lb ft) in a cross pattern. Rotate the wheel by three revolutions. Repeat until the bolts stabilize at the specified torque.

    1. Loosen bolts (9). Rotate the wheel by three revolutions.

    1. Tighten retainer bolts (9) to a torque of 30 ± 5 N·m (22 ± 4 lb ft) in a cross pattern. Rotate the wheel by three revolutions. Repeat until the bolts stabilize at the specified torque.

    1. Use Tool (G) in order to determine dimension (M). Dimension (M) is the distance from the outside face of the retainer to the end of the spindle. Measure the distance from the two holes that are opposite each other. Average the measurements.

      NOTICE

Failure to follow the recommended procedure or the specified tooling that is required for the procedure could result in damage to components.

To avoid component damage, follow the recommended procedure using the recommended tools.

Note: Relieve the pressure in the parking brake before Tool (A) is removed. Failure to remove the pressure could result in injury or death to personnel in the area.

    1. Remove Tool (A) .

    1. Remove retaining bolts (9) and retaining plate (10). Use Tool (G) in order to determine dimension (N). Dimension (N) is the thickness of the retainer at the bolt holes. Measure the thickness of the retaining plate at two locations that are opposite each other. Average the measurements.

Note: If necessary, use two 1/2 inch - 13 forcing screws to remove retainer (10) .

    1. Subtract average dimension (N) from average dimension (M). This amount is the average gap that is between the inside face of the retainer and the end of the spindle.

    1. Calculate the required thickness of the shims. Shims (11) must equal the gap that was calculated in Step 16.h minus .07 ± .03 mm (0.003 ± 0.001 inch).

      Illustration 5g00478221

    1. Use Tool (H) to assemble the required shims (11). Install plate (10) .

    1. Apply 9S-3263 Thread Lock Compound to the threads of bolts (9). Install retainer bolts (9). Tighten bolts (9) to a torque of 530 ± 70 N·m (390 ± 50 lb ft)in a cross pattern.
