  1. Make sure that you inspect the components for damage. Do not use damaged components.

  1. Select an area that will allow all of the components to be unloaded together.

  1. Select a suitable lifting device.

  1. Use suitable lifting straps to prevent damage to the paint. Four of the 1U-8260 lifting strap could be used to lift the implement. Use 140-7742 Sleeve to protect the lifting strap from sharp edges on the implement.

  1. Attach the lifting straps to the implement.

Note: Do not lift the large sections of the implement with less than four lifting straps.

  1. Begin to lift the component off the trailer. Make sure that the component is lifted in a level position. If necessary, lower the component and adjust the lifting straps in order to level the component.

  1. Use the lifting device to lift the component off the trailer.

  1. Use the lifting device to transfer the implement to a suitable location and lower the implement to the ground.

Assembly Procedure

Different sizes of Soil Finishers will be shipped. Use the procedure to guide the installation for all widths.

Note: Prior to tightening, do not coat any fasteners with oil or grease unless a coating is specified in the procedure.

Note: Unless this instruction contains specific directions, tighten the bolts to the torque that is specified in the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Torques for Inch Fasteners".

Use the following procedure to assemble the implement.

Installation of the Harrow

This section provides general procedures for the installation of harrows that are available from your Caterpillar dealer.

You must know the following information to successfully install a harrow:

  • Model of the implement

  • Size of the implement

  • Spacing of the shanks

  • Type of harrow

Reference: If necessary, refer to the Parts Manual in order to determine the fasteners that are used to assemble the implement.

Illustration 16g00852869

The following harrows are available from Caterpillar:

  • Harrow (Tine As)

  • Spike

  • Combination

  1. The Illustrations below provide the following information:

    • Spacing of individual bars for the harrow

    • Spacing of the hangers for the harrow

    • Offset of each bar for the harrow

Determine the Illustrations that represent the harrow that is being assembled.

  1. Position the row of bars that follow directly behind the implement.

  1. Position the harrows in order to provide 190.50 mm (7.5 inch) between the sections.

  1. Use the position of the bars in order to locate the hangers that are being installed on the implement.

    Illustration 17g00852867

  1. Use Illustrations 24 through Illustration 34 in order to determine the gap spacings that are necessary for each configuration of implement. Use the dimensions that are provided in order to determine the mounting locations for hangers (2). Make sure that the hangers are positioned in order to avoid hinges (1), shanks (5), and frame members (6) .

  1. Install the hangers. Use U-bolts (3) and nuts (4) to attach the hangers to the frame of the implement. Tighten the U-bolts evenly.

    Illustration 18g00852868

  1. The hangers must be positioned in order to avoid the shanks. Also, the hangers must be positioned in order to allow the installation of a hitch (trailing behind) (7). Your implement may allow the hangers to be shifted in order to accommodate individual components.

  1. Use Illustrations 20 through Illustration 23 for reference to assemble the components of the harrow.
