Saw Chain Lubrication System - Inspect/Adjust

Usage:

HH45 CFE
The saw chain is lubricated automatically. The saw chain is lubricated as the saw bar is extended. The lubricating oil is stored in the lubricating oil tank.

When the saw bar is extended, a cam that is located on the housing contacts a piston in the oil pump. As the piston of the pump is pressed upward, lubricating oil is pumped through the housing to the saw bar.

Inspect the lubrication system for proper lubrication of the saw chain. Lubricating oil should be visible on the saw chain and on the drive sprocket if the lubricating system is working properly.

If no oil is present, a problem may exist with the lubrication system. Use the following troubleshooting steps in order to correct the problem.

  1. Make sure that the lubricating oil tank is full of oil. Use a biodegradable oil in the tank, when possible.

  1. Check the condition of the breather cap on the lubricating oil tank. The breather cap should not be dirty. If the breather is clogged with dirt, a vacuum will be present. The oil pump will not operate properly if a vacuum is present in the lubricating oil tank. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubrication System Oil Level - Check" for information on checking the condition of the breather cap.

  1. Check the strainer of the lubrication system for the saw chain. The strainer should not be clogged with dirt. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Saw Oil Pump Screen- Clean" for information on checking the condition of the screen.

  1. Oil pump (3) has two check valves (1) that should be checked. Clean these check valves. The oil pump is located near the saw motor. The oil pump can be accessed from the holes on the frame of the harvester head near the saw motor. Clean the check valve in a clean nonflammable solvent. Piston (2) should also be checked. The piston of the oil pump should move freely in the pump housing.

Note: The two check valves of the saw pump are different. Ensure that check valves (1) are reinstalled in the correct locations. The saw pump may not function correctly if check valves (1) were installed in the wrong locations.

  1. Carefully depress piston (2) with a screwdriver. Depress piston (2) several times. If the lubrication system is working correctly, oil should appear on the saw bar.

Note: Periodically, air needs to be purged from the lubrication system. Use Step 5 for this procedure.

  1. Check O-ring (4) between the tensioner and the bearing housing. If this O-ring is missing or damaged, proper lubrication will not occur.

  1. Check O-ring (5) on the end of the piston assembly of the saw bar tensioner. The saw bar holder must be removed in order to access O-ring (5). If this O-ring is missing or damaged, proper lubrication will not occur.

  1. Check locknut (6) on the housing of the saw bar tensioner. This nut should be tight. If the locknut is loose, lubricating oil will not reach the saw chain. This locknut is located next to the drive sprocket.

  1. Make sure that the piston of the oil pump is in place. Make sure that the cam that actuates the piston for the oil pump is in place.
