NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Open the engine hood. The secondary fuel filters are on the left side of the machine.

  1. Close the fuel shutoff valve at the fuel tank.

    Illustration 2g00527502

Note: This machine is equipped with two secondary fuel filters on a single filter base. The upper filter is upside-down. Always drain the upper filter before you remove upper filter (1) or lower filter (2) .

  1. Drain the fuel from upper filter (1) into a suitable container. Open drain valve (3) first. Then, immediately open drain valve (4) .

Note: Make sure that the drain valves are opened in the proper order. If you open the wrong drain valve first, an air lock in the fuel system may occur. This will not allow fuel to drain from the upper filter.

  1. When the fuel stops draining, keep the drain valves open. Loosen upper filter (1) by 1/4 turn. As the filter is loosened, additional fuel may drain from the drain valves. When the fuel stops draining, loosen the filter by an additional 1/4 turn. Observe the flow of the fuel. Repeat this procedure until fuel does not drain from the drain valves. Close the drain valves. Properly dispose of the drained fuel.

  1. Remove upper filter (1) .

  1. Inspect the fuel filter element for debris by cutting the filter open. Dispose of the used fuel filter element properly.

  1. Clean the filter mounting base. Make sure that all of the used seal is removed from the filter mounting base.

    NOTICE

Do not fill fuel filters with fuel before installing them. Contaminated fuel will cause accelerated wear to fuel system parts.

  1. Apply a thin coat of clean diesel fuel to the sealing surface of the new fuel filter element.

  1. Install the new fuel filter element by hand. When the seal contacts the filter mounting base, tighten the fuel filter element by an additional 3/4 turn.

There are rotation index marks on the fuel filter element. The rotation index marks are separated by 90 degree intervals. Use these rotation index marks as a guide for proper tightening.

  1. Open the fuel shutoff valve at the fuel tank.

  1. Prime the fuel system.

Reference: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System - Prime" for the correct procedure.

  1. Close the engine hood.
