Accumulator (Suspension) - Remove and Install

Removal Procedure

------ WARNING! ------

At operating temperature, the hydraulic tank is hot and under pressure.

Hot oil and components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin.

Remove the filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Remove the filler cap slowly in order to relieve pressure.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Purge the pressure from the accumulator. See Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7028 for the correct procedure.

  2. Remove two bolts (1) that secure cover (2) to the machine frame. Loosen two bolts (3) and the nuts that secure cover (2) to the machine frame.

  3. Loosen hose clamp (4) from hose (5). Remove hose (5) from the mounting pin. Remove hose (5) from hose bundle (6).

  4. Remove cover (2) from the machine frame. Slot (7) in cover (2) is positioned over bolt (3). Cover (2) positions in front of spacer (8). The right side of the cover is symmetrical to the left side.

  5. Remove four bolts (10), the washers and two half clamps (12) in order to disconnect hydraulic hose (11) from suspension accumulator (9). Remove four bolts (15), the washers and two half clamps (16) in order to disconnect hydraulic hose (13) from suspension accumulator (9). Remove the O-ring seals from the hoses.

  6. Remove bolt (19), the washer and hose clamp (20) that secures hose bundle (16) to bracket (17). Remove two bolts (18) and the washers that secure bracket (17) to the machine frame.

  7. Attach a nylon lifting strap (22) and a hoist to suspension accumulator (9). Remove two nuts (21), the washers and clamp assembly (23) that secures suspension accumulator (9) to the mounting bracket. Use the hoist in order to remove suspension accumulator (9) from the mounting bracket. The weight of the accumulator is 45 kg (99 lb).

Installation Procedure

  1. Inspect all parts and clean all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar parts for replacement.

  2. Attach a nylon lifting strap (22) and a hoist to suspension accumulator (9). Use the hoist in order to position suspension accumulator (9) to the mounting bracket. The weight of the accumulator is 45 kg (99 lb). Install two nuts (21), the washers and clamp assembly (23) that secures suspension accumulator (9) to the mounting bracket.

  3. Install two bolts (18) and the washers that secure bracket (17) to the machine frame.

  4. Install bolt (19), the washer and hose clamp (20) that secures hose bundle (16) to bracket (17).

  5. Install the O-ring seals to the hoses. Install four bolts (10), the washers and two half clamps (12) in order to connect hydraulic hose (11) to suspension accumulator (9). Install four bolts (15), the washers and two half clamps (14) in order to connect hydraulic hose (13) to suspension accumulator (9).

  6. Install cover (2) to the machine frame. Slot (7) in cover (2) is positioned over bolt (3). Cover (2) positions in front of spacer (8). The right side of the cover is symmetrical to the left side.

  7. Wrap hose (5) around hose bundle (6). Install hose (5) on the mounting bracket. Tighten hose clamp (4) on hose (5).

  8. Install two bolts (1) that secure cover (2) to the machine frame. Tighten two bolts (3) and the nuts that secure cover (2) to the machine frame.

  9. Charge the accumulator. See Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7028 for the correct procedure.

  10. Check the fluid level in the hydraulic tank. See Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7028 for the correct procedure.
