NOTICE |
---|
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
Hot engine components can cause injury from burns. Before performing maintenance on the engine, allow the engine and the components to cool. |
Note: Put identification marks on all lines, on all hoses, on all wires, and on all tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, hoses, and tubes. This helps to prevent fluid loss and this helps to keep contaminants from entering the system.
- Remove the wire seal from the bolts.

- Disconnect tube assembly (3) from elbow (4) on fuel ratio control (1) .
- Remove two bolts (2) and the washers that hold the fuel ratio control.
- Remove fuel ratio control (1) from the governor.
Fuel Ratio Control Adjustment
Illustration 2 | g00538769 |
Tooling (C) contains two tamperproof bolts. The tamperproof bolts are located at callout (5) and callout (6) . |
Note: Some 3406 engines with mechanical fuel systems will have the new tamperproof bolts on the fuel ratio control. The illustration above shows the location of the new tamperproof bolts.
- If an adjustment is required on the fuel ratio control, the tamperproof bolts must be removed. To remove (5) tamperproof bolt and (6) tamperproof bolt, use the procedure that follows:
- Use Tool (A) to drill a hole in the center of the tamperproof bolt.
- Use Tool (B) in the bolts to remove the bolts.
- Install Tooling (C) .
- Tighten the tamperproof bolts. The bolt head will break off at approximately 12 ± 3 N·m (8.9 ± 2.2 lb ft) for 1/4 in. diameter tamperproof bolts.
