The rear service brake assemblies are located in the center housing. The machine uses oil cooled multi-disc brakes. One multiple disc brake is located on each side of the machine. Both brakes are actuated by the service brake pedal. The service brakes are lubricated and cooled by oil from the differential steering system.

A service brake assembly consists of the following components: separator plate (4), stationary plate (6), piston (7) and two rotating discs (3) .

Discs (3) are splined to carrier (5). Carrier (5) is fastened to input shaft (9) and bevel gear (10) .

The following items are attached to the center housing: separator plate (4), stationary plate (6) and piston (7). These items are prevented from turning by a dowel (1) .

Operation of the service brake pedal activates the master cylinder which increases the pressure in the brake line. The increased pressure enters through inlet passage (2) and flows behind piston (7).

When the pressure in the brake line increases, the pressure forces piston (7) to move to the right. This forces separator plate (4) and stationary plate (6) to contact rotating discs (3) .

The friction between the following components causes input shaft (9) and bevel gear (10) from rotating freely: separator plate (4), stationary plate (6) and rotating discs (3). The amount of friction that is between the components is dependent on brake pedal effort. This friction slows the machine or the friction stops the machine.

When the service brake pedal is released, the pressure in the brake line decreases. Piston (7) moves to the left. This friction that is between the components is released. This allows input shaft (9) and bevel gear (10) to rotate freely.
