Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
The space between the body and the frame becomes a zero clearance area when the body is lowered. Failure to install the retaining cable can result in injury or death to personnel working in this area. |
Personal injury can result from hot oil or hot components. At operating temperature, oil is hot and under pressure. Hot oil can cause burns. Remove the fill cap only when the engine is stopped, and the fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin. |
- Drain the hydraulic oil from the steering hydraulic tank. The steering hydraulic tank contains approximately
91 L (24 US gal) . Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7173, "Steering System Oil - Change" for the correct procedure.Show/hide tableIllustration 1 g00495981 - Position a suitable container under piston pump (1) in order to contain hydraulic oil for storage or disposal.

- Disconnect hose assembly (9) from the pump drive.
Note: Hose assembly (9) is disconnected from the pump drive so that there is enough clearance for the removal of piston pump (1).
- Attach a suitable lifting sling and a hoist to piston pump (1).
- Remove two bolts (8) and the washers in order to remove piston pump (1) from the pump drive. Use the hoist to remove piston pump (1). The weight of piston pump (1) is
34 kg (75 lb) .Show/hide tableIllustration 5 g00495987 - Lower piston pump (1) from the machine.
- Remove elbow (6) and the O-ring seal from piston pump (1).
- Remove O-ring seal (10) from piston pump (1).
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the removal procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.
Note: Put identification marks on all hose assemblies and on all tube assemblies for installation purposes. Plug all hose assemblies and all tube assemblies. This helps to prevent fluid loss and this helps to prevent contaminants from entering the system.
