Note: Before the torque divider is assembled certain clearances must be measured. The measurements must be within tolerance in order for the torque divider to operate with efficiency.

  1. Use the following procedure to check the clearance between the turbine wheel and the stator.

      Illustration 1g00495906

    1. Put stator (25) in position in turbine wheel (32). Hold the stator against one side of the turbine wheel. Use a feeler gauge (43) to measure the clearance between the stator and the turbine wheel.

    1. The clearance across the diameters between the stator and the turbine wheel must be 0.33 to 0.43 mm (.013 to .017 inch). Check the clearance at four points on the turbine wheel. The maximum permissible clearance across the diameters is .076 mm (.030 inch).

    1. The running clearance is one half of the clearance across the diameters between the stator and the turbine wheel. The running distance must be 0.165 to 0.215 mm (.0065 to .0085 inch). The maximum permissible running clearance is 0.38 mm (.015 inch).

  1. Use the following procedure to check the clearance between the impeller wheel and the stator.

      Illustration 2g00495912

    1. Use an outside micrometer (44). Measure the outside diameter of the flange on the stator. Take a measurement at four points on the stator. Record the lowest reading.

      Illustration 3g00495907

    1. Use an inside micrometer (45). Measure the inside diameter of the outer edge of the flange on impeller wheel (22). Take a measurement at four points on the flange. Record the highest reading.

    1. The clearance across the diameters between the impeller and the stator is the difference between the highest reading on the impeller and the lowest reading on the stator. The clearance must be 0.25 to 0.35 mm (.010 to .014 inch). The maximum permissible clearance across the diameters is 0.61 mm (.024 inch).

    1. The running clearance is one half of the measurement across the diameters. The running clearance must be 0.125 to 0.175 mm (.005 to .007 inch). The maximum permissible running clearance is 0.30 mm (.012 inch).

    1. Inner bearing (38) must be installed so that the bearing is flush with the surface of flange assembly (37) .

    1. Outer bearing (38) should have an inside diameter of 44.501 ± .013 mm (1.7520 ± .0005 inch) after installation.

  1. If carrier (39) was removed from flange assembly (37) the carrier must be heated for installation. Heat the carrier to a temperature of 138°C to 166°C (280°F to 330°F) for a maximum of 10 minutes. Install carrier (39) on flange assembly (37). Install seal ring (40) on the carrier.
