Turbocharger - Remove

Usage:

769D 5SS

Removal Procedure

Start By:

  1. Install the retaining ring and the pin. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, SENR1561, "Retaining Ring and Pin (Body) - Remove and Install".


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Personal injury can result from hot oil or hot components.

At operating temperature, oil is hot and under pressure. Hot oil can cause burns.

Remove the fill cap only when the engine is stopped, and the fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin.


  1. Open the front and rear hood assemblies.

  2. Remove tie strap (5) and disconnect wire harness (4) at the electrical connector.

  3. Loosen four hose clamps (1). Remove tube assembly (3) and rubber elbow (2).

  4. Position a suitable container under the turbocharger in order to contain oil for storage or disposal.

  5. Remove two bolts (9) from oil drain tube assembly (10). Remove the O-ring seal. The O-ring seal is located between oil drain tube (10) and turbocharger (6).

  6. Remove four bolts (8) and the locknuts from adapter (7), and support assembly (11).

  7. Remove two bolts (15) from supply tube assembly (14). Remove supply tube assembly (14). Remove the O-ring seal. The O-ring seal is located between supply tube assembly (14) and turbocharger (6).

  8. Remove four high temperature bolts (13) and the locknuts. Bolts (13) hold turbocharger (6) to manifold (12). Discard bolts (13), the nuts and the lockwashers.

  9. Fasten a lifting sling to turbocharger (6), as shown. Attach the lifting sling to a hoist.

  10. Remove adapter (7) from turbocharger (6). Slide the turbocharger (6) off air pipe (16). Remove turbocharger (6) and gasket (17) from manifold (12). The weight of turbocharger (6) is 27 kg (60 lb).

  11. Discard gasket (17) after removal.
