Removal Procedure

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Open the front and rear hood assemblies.

    ------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from hot coolant, steam and alkali.

At operating temperature, engine coolant is hot and under pressure. The radiator and all lines to heaters or the engine contain hot coolant or steam. Any contact can cause severe burns.

Remove filler cap slowly to relieve pressure only when engine is stopped and radiator cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

Cooling System Conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with skin and eyes.

  2. Release the pressure in the cooling system by slowly loosening the filler cap on the radiator. Drain the coolant from the radiator into a suitable container for storage or disposal. The coolant level should be below the cylinder head. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7092, "Cooling System Coolant (ELC) - Change".

  4. Remove two bolts (6), the spacers, and bar (7). Remove sixteen bolts (5), the washers, and upper plate assembly (8).

  5. Secure a lifting sling around fan spider assembly (10). Attach the lifting sling to a hoist.

Note: Mark the front of the fan spider assembly and the fan drive adapter so the fan can be installed in the same position.

    NOTICE

In order to protect the radiator core during fan removal, place a piece of cardboard between the fan and the radiator.

  6. Remove six bolts (9) and the washers. Remove fan spider assembly (10) from the machine. The weight of spider assembly (10) is 36 kg (79 lb).

Installation Procedure

NOTICE

Be sure the mating surfaces of the fan spider assembly and the fan drive adapter are clean.

NOTICE

In order to protect the radiator core during fan installation, place a piece of cardboard between the fan and the radiator.
