SUBJECT: THE ALTERNATOR PULLEY MAY BE ASSEMBLED INCORRECTLY
PROBLEM:
The alternator pulley may be installed incorrectly on certain 12H, 135H, 140H, 143H, 160H, 163H, 14H, and 16H Motor Graders. The pulley could be assembled backwards on the affected machines. An incorrectly installed pulley results in the misalignment of the pulley. Several problems could be indicators of an incorrect alternator pulley installation. These symptoms include:
- Premature belt wear
- Belt noise
- A ticking noise, which can come from the alternator. This can occur when the pulley causes the alternator fan to deflect and hit the alternator.
SOLUTION:
Inspect the puller to ensure proper installation.
Illustration 1. A pulley that is installed incorrectly.
(A) The bolt does not come through the flange nut (threads are visible on the inside of the nut).
(B) Extrusion on pulley is visible when it should press against the alternator fan.
Illustration 2. A properly installed alternator pulley.
(1) The bolt extends through the flange nut
(2) The pulley extrusion face is against the alternator fan (and not visible)
(3) There is a counter bore in the pulley where the flange nut rests
If the alternator pulley is not installed correctly (Illustration 1), remove it and reinstall correctly. See Illustration 2.
Refer to the Disassembly and Assembly Manual for the machine. See "Alternator Remove and Install" to reference how to access the alternator and remove and install the belt. See Table 1 for the torque specification of the nut.
Note: The alternator does not need to be removed.
