SUBJECT: THE HOSE ASSEMBLY THAT CONNECTS THE CASE TO THE TRANSMISSION MAY NOT SEAL PROPERLY

PROBLEM:

The hose assembly that connects the case to the transmission may not seal properly. The surface finish of the joint may be too rough for the o-ring to seal. In addition, oil may leak from around the bolt holes.

SOLUTION:

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Illustration 1. Location of the hose that may not seal properly.

Drain the oil. Disconnect 177-1677 Hose As.

Grind the surface of the mating plate. Ensure that the case is free of debris from the grinder before refilling.

Install a new 4J-0520 O-Ring Seal. Connect 177-1677 Hose As using the existing hardware.

Note: Apply 7M-7456 Bearing Mount Compound to the bolt before installing. Loctite Dri Loc 202 may be used as an alternative.
