SUBJECT: 185-3628 & 185-3629 Steering Shafts Must Be Inspected Prior To Installation
PROBLEM:
The upper joint of the 185-3628 & 185-3629 Steering Shafts may seize or bind during operation. If this occurs while the steering shaft is in the tilt down position, steering effort may increase.
Note: All 185-3628 & 185-3629 Steering Shafts in dealer parts stock should be protected from moisture and temperature extremes that will promote condensation and corrosion.
SOLUTION:
The following steps should be followed prior to placing these steering shafts into service:
- Exercise the upper joint by slowly pivoting the free end about the pins. If while exercising the upper joint, any resistance or stiffness is detected, do not install the steering shaft.
- Thoroughly penetrate the upper joint using 222-3110 Lubricant. If any black residue is flushed from the upper joint pin/hole interface, do not install the steering shaft.
- Before installing the steering shaft, thoroughly coat the upper joint with 129-1949 Grease.
Note: New, improved steering shafts will be announced in a future publication.
