New Bolt Used To Attach Refrigerant Hoses To Compressor {1802,1808}

Usage:

550 (7ZN),
570 (4XR),
580 (7CN) Wheel Harvesters

Description of Change: A longer bolt is being used to attach the refrigerant hoses to the air conditioning compressor. The longer bolt provides a stronger mount for the compressor refrigerant hoses.

Adaptable To:

Effective With: The new 8T-6466 Bolt replaces the former 8T-4185 Bolt (not canceled). The new bolt is effective with 550 (7ZN1-152, 154-Up), 570 (4XR1-153, 158-Up) and 580 (7CN1-175, 181-Up) Wheel Harvesters. The new bolt is adaptable to all machines using the former 8T-4185 Bolt.

Inspect the machine in order to determine if the machine was built with the 8T-4185 Bolt. The 8T-4185 Bolt is 50 mm (2.0 in) long. The 8T-6466 Bolt is 60 mm (2.36 in) long. If the machine was built with the 8T-4185 Bolt, replace the 8T-4185 Bolt with a new 8T-6466 Bolt.

Modification Procedure

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from contact with refrigerant. Contact with refrigerant can cause frostbite. Keep hands and face away to prevent injury. Protective goggles must always be worn when refrigerant lines are opened, even if the gauges indicate the system is empty of refrigerant. Always use precaution when a fitting is removed. Slowly loosen the fitting. If the system is still under pressure, release it slowly in a well-ventilated area. Personal injury or death can result from inhaling refrigerant through a lit cigarette. Inhaling air conditioner refrigerant gas through a lit cigarette or other smoking method or inhaling fumes released from a flame contacting air conditioner refrigerant gas, can cause bodily harm or death. Do not smoke when servicing air conditioners or wherever refrigerant gas may be present. Use a certified recovery and recycling cart to properly remove the refrigerant from the air conditioning system.

-------WARNING!-------

NOTE: Put identification on all lines, hoses, wires, and tubes for installation purposes. Use caps and plugs on all lines, hoses, and tubes in order to prevent fluid loss or contamination of the systems.

1. Evacuate the air conditioning system.

Reference: Service Manual, SENR5664 "Air Conditioning and Heating Systems with R-134A Refrigerant".

Reference: Special Publication, NEDG5065 "Air Conditioning Tools".

The publications referenced will provide the proper procedure, equipment and tools in order to evacuate the air conditioning system in any Caterpillar machine.

2. Remove the 8T-4185 Bolt (1).

3. Install the new 8T-6466 Bolt (1).

4. Torque the new bolt to 55 ± 10 N·m (40 ± 7 lb ft).

NOTE: Use the following method to charge the air conditioning system. First, collect the refrigerant. Evacuate the system, and charge the system with the correct amount of refrigerant. The correct charge of refrigerant is 1.2 kg (2.6 lb).

5. Evacuate the air conditioning system and charge the air conditioning system.
