Common Services Version 1.3 Upgrade Install Instructions as shipped after 15 December 1996 with Vehicular Off-Board Bundle; VIMS-PC Customer Upgrade, JERD2175.

All Common Services System, ISB, and VIMS documentation assumes the user has some Microsoft Windows familiarity. If you are not familiar with Microsoft Windows, please take some time to acquaint yourself with Windows before installing the Caterpillar software programs.

VIMS-PC version 2.1 upgrade package includes Common Services System (CSS) version 1.3 upgrade, Information System Builder (ISB) version 1.1 upgrade, as well as VIMS-PC version 2.1 software. The installation documentation for CSS needs clarification to avoid confusion when doing an upgrade or reinstall for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 operating systems. Use the following instructions to install the Common Services System software upgrade instead of the Common Services System Version 1.3 Upgrade Install Instructions that shipped with the upgrade package. Note that a re-reinstall will remove any existing security profiles; an upgrade will not.

Upgrading In Windows 3.1

1. Close all Windows applications.

2. Close Windows.

3. At the DOS prompt, restart Windows.

4. Insert the Common Services Install disk into the diskette drive (drive A for example).

5. From the Windows Program Manager menu, select File and click on the menu item Run.

6. Type "A: install" in the Run dialog box. Click on OK or press enter.

7. A Caterpillar Common Services installation dialog box displays. The dialog box has an upgrade and a reinstall option available. Select the upgrade pushbutton. An upgrade will replace only the program files. Reinstall will delete your security profiles from CSS if they were previously configured.

8. At the Language Choice prompt, click on OK or press enter. English is the only language available.

9. In the installation dialog box enter the correct drive path if different from that shown in the Installation dialog box. Click on OK or press enter.

10. The install program displays a progress bar. Wait for the program to install.

11. After the application installation finishes, a dialog box asks if you want to add new icons to the program manager group. Click on No or press enter.

Common Services V1.3 database services displays an icon on start-up in the lower left corner of the screen. If this icon is closed while any CSS program is running, the program will quit the next time it attempts to access a file. To help prevent this from happening, make the icon invisible.

To make the icon invisible, edit the bti.ini file with the Windows Write program.

1. Locate the bti.ini file in the Windows sub-directory.

2. Start Write and select Open from the File menu.

3. Select the Windows directory and select the All Files option.

4. Scroll through the list of files to locate the bti.ini file.

5. Highlight the file and click on OK to open it.

6. Locate the line "desktopicon=Yes" and change to "desktopicon=No".

Upgrading In Windows 95

1. Close all open applications.

2. Shutdown and restart Windows 95.

3. Insert Common Services System Install disk in the diskette drive (drive A for example).

4. Click on the Start button on the Windows 95 button bar.

5. Click on the Settings/Control Panel menu item.

6. Click on the Add/Remove Program icon.

7. Click on the Next button to install from the floppy drive.

8. Click on the Finish button.

9. A Caterpillar Common Services installation dialog box displays. The dialog box has an upgrade and a reinstall option available. Select the upgrade pushbutton. An upgrade will replace only the program files. Reinstall will delete your security profiles from CSS if they were previously configured.

10. At the Language Choice prompt, click on OK or press enter. English is the only language available.

11. At the target directory dialog box click on OK or press enter.

12. The install program displays a progress bar. Wait for the program to install.
