Description of Change: This article replaces the previous service magazine article published December 16, 1996; Page 8, New Shaft Assembly Used in the Steering Gear Groups to Improve Service Life.
A new shaft assembly is used in the steering gear group. The new shaft assembly will improve the service life of the steering gear group.
Adaptable To: The 135-5283 Shaft Assembly shown in Illustration 1 is a direct replacement for the former 8X-1225 Shaft Assembly effective with 776D (5ER76) and 784B (5RK23) Tractors, 771D (6JR90) and 775D (6KR95), Quarry Trucks, 769D (5TR239), 773D (7ER180), 777D (3PR79) and 785B (6HK590) Off-Highway Trucks. This change is adaptable to all earlier 776C (2TK1-Up), 776D (5ER1-75) Tractors, 771D (6JR1-89) Quarry Trucks, 769C (01X1-Up), 769D (5TR1-238), 773B (63W1-Up), 773D (7ER1-179), 775D (6KR1-94), 777C (4XJ1-Up), 777D (3PR1-78), 784B (5RK1-22), 785 (8GB1-Up) and 785B (6HK1-589) Off-Highway Trucks.

The 135-5284 Shaft Assembly is a direct replacement for 8X-1224 Shaft Assembly effective with 789B (7EK452), 793B (1HL490) and 793C (4AR79) Off-Highway Trucks. This change is adaptable to all 789 (9ZC1-Up), 789B (7EK1-451), 793 (3SJ1-Up), 793B (1HL1-489) and 793C (4AR1-78) Off-Highway Trucks. A typical view of 135-5284 Shaft Assembly is also pictured in Illustration 2.
NOTE: As shown in Illustration 3, installation of either shaft assembly (1) requires the new 135-5295 Tube (2) which directly replaces the former 8X-2010 Tube.
Steering gear group numbers and model usage are listed in Charts 1, 2 and 3 for each shaft assembly.
