Improved Starter Solenoid Assemblies Available {1467,1518}

Usage:

Machines Using 3E-5449, 3E-7859, 3E-7770, 9X-4250, 9X-4823, 9X-9511, 105-4037, 105-4038 Starter Solenoid Assemblies

Reference: Service Manual Module; SENR3581; Delco Remy 37-MT, 41-MT, 42-MT Series Starting Motors

Description of Change: The listed starter solenoid assemblies have been changed to improve reliability by reducing the possibility of solenoid coil shorts and opens, as well as failures caused by moisture entry. These changes are:

1. A rubber washer has been added inside the solenoid to protect the solenoid coils against vibration.

2. The solenoid coils are held in place with an improved application of epoxy.

3. The plastic cap of the solenoids has been redesigned to prevent cracking which can lead to moisture entry and damage of the solenoid contacts. The improved solenoids can be visually identified by the change in plastic cap design. The previous cap design is identified by the small projection (1) toward the motor terminal side of the cap. The improved cap does not have this projection. See Illustrations 1 & 2.

Adaptable To:

The 3E-5449, 3E-7859, 3E-7770, 9X-4250, 9X-4823, 9X-9511, 105-4037, 105-4038 Starter Solenoid Assemblies have been improved effective with date code 6B01 (6 = year 96, B = February, 01 = 1st day) or 2/1/96. These improved starter solenoid assemblies are on starter motors with date code 96D15 (96 = year, D = April, 15 = 15th day) or 4/15/96. The 3E-5449, 3E-7859, 3E-7770, 9X-4250, 9X-4823, 9X-9511, 105-4037, 105-4038 Starter Solenoid Assemblies are a direct replacement for the previous versions and are in production on machines and engines using these starter motor and solenoid assemblies.

NOTE: On machines and engines equipped with 3E-7985 (24 volt), 8C-3663 (24 volt), and 8C-3662 (12 volt) Engine Shutdown Solenoids, a failure of the starter solenoid can cause a failure of the engine shutdown solenoid. If the starter motor remains energized, the engine shutdown solenoid will also remain energized and may fail since it is not a continuous duty solenoid.
