The procedure for adjusting differential Pre-load has been changed to make the process of selecting the shim size easier. The following instructions should be included in Step 17 of the procedure:
NOTE: See the chart to make the initial selection for the shim size to be placed behind the bearing cup in the left hand brake housing. Rolling torque must be checked to confirm that the desired .002 inch - .009 inch preload has been obtained as follows:
-
- * After the gauge tool has been used and while the sun gear is still out of the L.H. trumpet assembly, assemble the differential and L.H. trumpet assembly onto the center casting.
- * Remove the drive pinion assembly.
- * Remove the differential lock spring and then slide the differential lock coupling into an engaged position.
- * Wrap string around the differential lock spline or use a torque wrench on the sun gear to measure the differential assembly rolling torque. It should be 2 N·m (20 lb in)-10 N·m (90 lb in)
- * Change shim size if required to get this torque.
- * After the gauge tool has been used and while the sun gear is still out of the L.H. trumpet assembly, assemble the differential and L.H. trumpet assembly onto the center casting.
NOTE: The shim size is obtained when the cone and roller assembly is assembled in the head assembly, and the cup is in its free state (not assembled in the inner brake housing assembly).
