Requirement For FLASH Programming Capability{1900,1901}

Usage:

Challenger 75 (4CJ),
Challenger 75C (4KK),
Challenger 85C (9TK) Agricultural Tractors

What is Caterpillar FLASH?

FLASH is a memory technology that is used in the latest Caterpillar Electronic Control Modules (ECM). This memory technology allows the changing of the information in the personality module inside the ECM, via the data link connection.

Why Do I Need This?

Beginning with the 1995 3126 HEUI ECM, the cover that allowed removal of the personality module has been deleted. The ECM is now a sealed control. The 1996 ECM for 3176B and 3406E engines will also be sealed. The FLASH program will be required to update/uprate any of these engines.

What Do I Need?

To take advantage of the flash technology, you must obtain a software program from Caterpillar called FLASH. This program will allow you to "download" the appropriate personality module information (flash file) to the ECM.

How Do I Get The FLASH Program?

The FLASH program can be obtained two different ways:

1. Purchase Caterpillar form LEXT3037.
2. Purchase the Cat ET program, form JERD2124.

What Else Do I Need?

A personal computer (PC), a Communication Adapter, and cables are required.

What Type Of Computer Do I Need?

To run the FLASH program LEXT3037, almost any PC will work. This is a DOS based program. If you obtained FLASH as part of CAT ET, the computer requirements are based on those required by Cat ET. Cat ET requires at least a 386 IBM or IBM compatible PC running MS Windows 3.1. For more information about the hardware and software requirements of Cat ET, refer to publication JEHP1026-01.

What Communications Adapter Do I Need?

The Caterpillar 7X-1700 Communications Adapter is the preferred communications adapter. The 7X-1700 Communications Adapter requires a NEXG4523 Service Program Module (SPM), a 7X-1412 Cable, a 7X-1688 Cable, and one or all of the following adapter cables:

* 7X-1688 - All "In Cab" data link connectors except Navistar and General Motors 3116 HEUI
* 7X-1403 - Navistar "In Cab" connector
* 7X-1714 - General Motors "In Cab" connector for 3116 HEUI engines

The MPSI ProlLink tool with the Caterpillar Cartridge and proper cables can also be used as the communications adapter.

When I Get FLASH, How Do I Get The Personality Module Information (FLASH File)?

When you purchase either the FLASH program, LEXT3037, or the Cat ET program, JERD2124, a copy of the most current flash files are included. If you purchase the LEXT3037, you can also purchase the optional flash file subscription. The flash file subscription is NOT available with the purchase of Cat ET (JERD2124). However, the preferred method of obtaining flash files is to download them from the Caterpillar Mailbox. This method requires that you have a fast modem (9600 baud or faster) attached to a PC. The PC communications program Hyper ACCESS 5 (LERQ3133) is also required. Using this method, the latest flash files are available 24 hours a day.
