The high pressures and close tolerances of the 3176 Engine fuel injection system require clean fuel in order to achieve acceptable service life. The use of fuel filter assemblies other than the 1R-0749 High Efficiency Fuel Filter Assembly in the severe environment typically found in Challenger applications will result in excessive erosion of the fuel injector spill valves, plungers, and barrels. Indicators of damage due to erosion are low power, hard starting, and weak firing/missing cylinders.
The 1R-0749 High Efficiency Fuel Filter Assembly is the ONLY fuel filter assembly approved for use on 3176 Engines in Challenger Agricultural Tractors. This change is effective with Challenger 75C (4KK590) and Challenger 85C (9TK290). Earlier Challenger 75, 75C, and 85C Agricultural Tractors using the 1R-0712 and 4N-5823 Fuel Filter Assembly should be upgraded to the 1R-0749 High Efficiency Fuel Filter Assembly as soon as practical.
The new filter assembly media traps significantly smaller particles than the previous designs. This filter media is available ONLY in Caterpillar filters. Spin-on after-market filters do NOT compare and should NEVER be used.
The fuel filter assembly change intervals remain at 250 hours, but contaminated fuel supplies and fuel tanks will significantly reduce this interval.
