Rework Procedure
NOTE: This rework can be performed with the block- mounted sound suppression plate in place on the engine (if so equipped).
NOTE: If performing this rework after a timing advance failure, repair the timing advance prior to the oil level gage rework described below. Also inspect the oil filter for excessive metal which may indicate metal erosion from piston crowns caused by excessive timing advance.
1. Drain the engine oil fromboth the shallow and deep sumps of the oil pan while the oil is "hot".
2. Allow the oil to drain for 20 minutes.
3. Install both drain plugs in the oil pan.
4. Remove the existing oil filter and install a new, dry (no oil in it) 1R0716 Oil Filter.
5. Add 32 quarts (8 gallons) of CF4 engine oil directly into the sump (oil pan) at location 1, 2, or 3 as shown in the attached Illustration.
6. Wait 5 minutes.
7. Install a new 1178949 Oil Level Gage.
8. Remove oil level gage noting oil level.
9. Mark this level as the "ADD" mark (use an engraving pen to mark).
10. Add 4 quarts (1 gallon) of oil using the same location as in Step 5 (total oil in the system at this point is 36 quarts (9 gallons)).
11. Wait 5 minutes.
12. Install the oil level gage.
13. Remove the oil level gage noting the oil level.
14. Mark this level as the "FULL" mark (use an engraving pen to mark).
15. Add 4 quarts (1 gallon) of oil for the oil filter (total oil in the system at this point is 40 quarts (10 gallons)).
NOTE: If the engine is equipped with an auxiliary oil filter, refill with the manufacturers recommended capacity.
16. Start engine and check for leaks.
