Rework Procedure
NOTE: It is recommended that "FLASH" programming be used to update the personality module instead of replacing the personality module. FLASH Programming is more cost effective, creates less customer down time , and eliminates parts availability problems.
NOTE: The updates to the electronic control group will provide or enhance the following features:
- Trip Information (Totals/Histograms/Custom Data).
- Fuel Temperature Monitoring/Power Correction.
- Maintenance Indicators.
- Snapshot Recorder.
- J1922 Transmission Communications.
- SoftCruise Control.
- AC Fan Control.
- Fuel Temperature Monitoring/Power Correction.
1. Read the part number of the existing control group (personality module) using an ECAP or FLASH program. The part number can be verified using ECAP selection "Read Customer Specified Parameter" or FLASH selection "ECM STATUS". If the existing personality module part number is NOT listed in the "Parts Needed" section of the service letter, proceed to Step 2.
2. If using FLASH programming, select the correct FLASH File and "APPLY FLASH".
or
Install the appropriate new personality module.
3. When the new personality module is installed, an ACTIVE Diagnostic Code 253-02 (56) "CHECK CUSTOMER OR SYSTEM PARAMETERS" may be present. The ECAP will list the parameters that need to be reprogrammed.
Reprogram theCustomer or System Parameters listed on the ECAP.
NOTE: The ECAP must have NEXG4522 Version 1.3 Service Program Module (SPM) installed to view/reprogram the new Customer Parameters "SoftCruise Control" and "AC Pressure Switch Fan-On Time".
Complete the following steps to Reprogram these Customer Parameters. (The Customer Password will be required to change these parameters.)
Soft Cruise Control: Program from "ON" to "OFF"(Press RETURN and answer the question "Are you sure you want to change this parameter (Y or N)?" with "Y" then RETURN). The Tattletale will increase and Diagnostic Code will clear. If desired, program SoftCruise from "OFF" to "ON" ("ON" is factory default).
AC Pressure Switch Fan-On Time: Program time (seconds) from "0" to "0" (Press RETURN and answer the question "Are you sure you want to change this parameter (Y or N)?" with "Y" then RETURN). The Tattletale will increase and Diagnostic Code will clear.
NOTE: Refer to SENR5582-01 3176B & 3406E Diesel Truck Engine Electronic Troubleshooting manual for more information on this subject.
4. For 3176B only, if a new personality module is installed, replace the 1106894 40-Pin Connector Seal on both P1 (OEM) and P2 (CATERPILLAR).
A. Clean the connector plugs/receptacles with denatured alcohol and a cotton swab.
B. Install a 1106844 Seal on P1 and P2 40-Pin Connectors.
C. Lubricate the seals with a THIN FILM of 1P0808 Lithium grease.
NOTE: Do Not use 8T9020 Dielectric tune-Up grease.
D. Install harness connectors into ECM. Carefully align connector and tighten connector screws to a torque of 2.25 ± 0.25 N·m ( 20.0 ± 2.0 lb. in).
NOTE: Do not over-tighten the connector screws.
